چکیده

The Lockman Hole is well known as the region with the lowest neutral atomic hydrogen column density on the entire sky. We present an analysis of the soft X-ray background radiation towards the Lockman Hole using ROSAT all-sky survey data. This data is correlated with the Leiden/Dwingeloo survey (Galactic H i 21 cm-line emission) in order to model the soft X-ray background by using radiative transfer calculations for four ROSAT energy bands simultaneously. It turns out, that an important gas fraction, ranging between 20–50%, of the X-ray absorbing material is not entirely traced by the H i but is in the form of ionized hydrogen. Far-ultraviolet absorption line measurements by FUSE are consistent with this finding and support an ionized hydrogen component towards the Lockman Hole.

UV and X-ray Observations of Mass Outflows in AGN

More than half of all low-redshift AGN exhibit UV and X-ray absorption by highly ionized gas. The observed UV and X-ray absorption lines are almost always blue-shifted at velocities of hundreds of km/s, indicating that the absorbing gas is outflowing from the active nucleus. In some cases the inferred mass flux rivals the Eddington limit of the central black hole, an indication that these outfl...

I consider the thermal bremsstrahlung emission from hot accretion flows (Bondi/ADAFs), taking into account the finite size of the observing telescope's beam (R beam) relative to the Bondi accretion radius (R A). For R beam ≫ R A soft X-ray emission from the hot interstellar medium surrounding the black hole dominates the observed emission while for R beam ≪ R A hard X-ray emission from the accr...

A window to the Galactic X-ray halo: The ISM towards the Lockman hole

The diffuse soft X-ray emission (E < 1 keV) of the Milky Way is a sensitive tool to study the distribution of the photoelectric absorbing ISM. Our field of interest encloses the Lockman hole. It represents the absolute minimum of NH i on the whole sky, accordingly it is considered as the “window to the distant universe”. To test this hypothesis we correlate the ROSAT all-sky survey energy bands...

The Evolving Accretion Disc in the Black Hole X-ray Transient XTE J1859+226⋆

We present HST, RXTE, and UKIRT observations of the broad band spectra of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1859+226 during the decline from its 1999–2000 outburst. Our UV spectra define the 2175 Å interstellar absorption feature very well and based on its strength we estimate E(B − V ) = 0.58 ± 0.12. Hence we deredden our spectra and follow the evolution of the spectral energy distribution o...

A Thermal Bremsstrahlung Model for the Quiescent X-ray Emission from Sagittarius A*

For Rbeam4RA, soft X-ray emission from the hot interstellar medium surrounding the black hole dominates the observed emission, while for Rbeam5RA, hard X-ray emission from the accretion f...
