Phytomass and carbon storage in the Stipa tenacissima steppes of the Baza basin, Andalusia, Spain
نویسندگان
چکیده
Above-ground perennial phytomass of Andalusian alfa grass steppes (7755·6 ± 1482 kg of dry matter ha (95% C.I.)) is clearly higher than phytomass density measured today in most alfa grass communities of the Maghreb because of low or inexistant present-day human-induced alterations and relatively favourable annual precipitation (370 mm) existing in these Spanish steppes. Total carbon storage measured in these steppes (43,372 kg ha) constitutes a very high mean value linked to the fact that the bulk (43,000 kg ha or 93%) of the carbon storage in the Spanish steppic areas consists of underground carbon. These values allow for precise available estimations concerning carbon storage in these steppelands.

Indices based on surface indicators predict soil functioning in Mediterranean semi-arid steppes
Methodologies based on indicators occupy a prevalent place when assessing ecosystem functioning and monitoring desertification processes because they are affordable yet do not compromise accuracy. The landscape function analysis (LFA), developed in Australia by David Tongway (CSIRO), uses soil surface indicators to assess the condition of a given ecosystem by producing three numerical indices (...
متن کاملEstimation of Soil Carbon Sequestration Rate in Steppes (Case Study: Saveh Rudshur Steppes)
Since Renaissance, the natural ecosystems have fallen into a complete state ofdisarray due to the rise in the amount of carbon dioxide. Soil, the unsparing stuff, is one of themajor sources of carbon storage, and plays a paramount role in the global equilibrium ofcarbon as well as carbon sequestration. Given that Iran is benefiting from vast steppes, therate of carbon sequestration in them dese...
متن کاملEvolutionary relationships can be more important than abiotic conditions in predicting the outcome of plant-plant interactions.
Positive and negative plant-plant interactions are major processes shaping plant communities. They are affected by environmental conditions and evolutionary relationships among the interacting plants. However, the generality of these factors as drivers of pairwise plant interactions and their combined effects remain virtually unknown. We conducted an observational study to assess how environmen...
متن کاملPost-Fire Seedling Recruitment and Morpho-Ecophysiological Responses to Induced Drought and Salvage Logging in Pinus halepensis Mill. Stands
Salvage logging is the commonest post-fire emergency action, but has unclear ecological effects. In the Mediterranean Basin, drought periods and fire regimes are changing and forest management should be adapted. In summer 2009, a mid-high severity fire burned 968 ha of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) forest in southeast Spain, which was submitted to salvage logging six months later. In spr...

Abstract Climate change and increase of global warming is one of the most important challenges in sustainable development, which is due to increase of concentration of greenhouse gasses and CO2 in atmosphere. Rangelands have approximately half of the worlds land area and store over third of terrestrial biosphere carbon. Therefore they have a large potential to sequester carbon. In this order, c...
