چکیده

! Barbiturate Protection in Acute Focal Cerebral Ischemia • We have found that anesthetic technique modifies the neurological and pathological se-quelae of unilateral middle cerebral artery and internal carotid artery occlusion in dogs. Occlu-sion was performed in seven groups of six dogs during each of the following anesthetic regimens: light (0.8%) halothane, "awake," deep (1.9%) halothane, deep halothane with mean arterial pressure reduced to 55 torr, pentobarbital (56 mg per kilogram), light halothane plus 40 mg per kilogram thiopental begun just before cerebral artery occlusion, and light halothane plus 40 mg per kilogram thiopental begun 15 minutes after occlusion. Body temperature, arterial Pco,. Po,, pH, and blood pressure (except as noted above) were maintained normal. Neurological examinations were performed daily. On the seventh day the dogs were killed and their brains removed for pathological study. Hemiparesis occurred in five of six dogs under light halothane and five of six awake dogs; a mean of 10.8% and 9.6%, respectively, of their right hemispheres were infarcted. In the deep halothane groups, all of the normotensive and five of the six hypotensive dogs became severely hemiplegic; mean infarction size was 28.2% and 34.1 %, respectively. Only one of the 18 dogs who received a barbiturate sustained a neurological deficit — a transient unilateral weakness. Means of 1.4%, 2.7%, and 0.1% of the right hemisphere were infarcted in the barbiturate animals. The protective action of barbiturates in canine acute focal cerebral ischemia suggests that they should be considered for anesthesia in surgery requiring cerebral vessel occlusion and perhaps even for treatment of acute stroke. Evaluation the protective effect of aminoguanidine on cortex and striatum damage in acute phase of focal cerebral ischemia in rat

Introduction: Several studies have indicated that late treatment of aminoguanidine (AG) reduces cerebral ischemic injuries in animal models. However, the effects of early treatment of AG on cerebral ischemic damage are not well understood. This study was designed to evaluate effect of early treatment of AG on cortex and striatum injuries as well as neurological dysfunctions in transient mode...

Effect of pentoxifylline on brain edema in a rat model of transient focal cerebral ischemia

Pervious studies have shown that pentoxifylline (PTX) has beneficial effects in reduction of stroke and brain trauma injuries in experimental animals. However, there is very little and controversial information about the effect of PTX on brain edema in cerebral ischemia. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of different doses of PTX on brain edema and neurological m...

Brain pH in focal cerebral ischemia and the protective effects of barbiturate anesthesia.

Intracellular brain pH was measured with a lipid-soluble, pH-sensitive fluorescent indicator in 16 squirrel monkeys. Eight of these were under halothane anesthesia and eight under barbiturate anesthesia. Measurements were taken before, during, and after focal incomplete ischemia. Brain pH following 3 h of cerebral focal ischemia changed from a normal value of 7.0 to 6.5 and 6.2 in animals studi...

Research Paper: Optimization of Transient Focal Cerebral Ischemia Model by Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion

Introduction: Cerebral ischemia is one of the most common causes of death in human populations in the industrial communities. The need for animal models is inevitable to study the pathophysiology and treatment of cerebral ischemia in human. The current study aimed at evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of different techniques used to create ischemia in previous studies and optimizing the tr...
