چکیده

Hyperbolic metamaterials are materials in which at least one principal dielectric constant is negative. We describe the refractive index surface, and the resulting refraction effects, for a biaxial hyperbolic metamaterial, with principal dielectric constants 1 < 0, 0 < 2 = 3. In this general case the two sheets of the index surface intersect, forming conical singularities. We derive the ray description of conical refraction in these materials and show that it is topologically and quantitatively distinct from conical refraction in a conventional biaxial material. We also develop a wave optics description, which allows us to obtain the diffraction patterns formed from arbitrary beams incident close to the optic axis. The resulting patterns lack circular symmetry and hence are qualitatively different from those obtained in conventional, positive index materials.

Near-infrared surface plasmon polariton dispersion control with hyperbolic metamaterials.

We demonstrate experimentally signatures and dispersion control of surface plasmon polaritons from 1 to 1.8 µm using periodic multilayer metallo-dielectric hyperbolic metamaterials. The fabricated structures are comprised of smooth films with very low metal filling factor. The measured dispersion properties of these hyperbolic metamaterials agree well with calculations using transfer matrix, fi...

Deep sub-wavelength nanofocusing of UV-visible light by hyperbolic metamaterials

Confining light into a sub-wavelength area has been challenging due to the natural phenomenon of diffraction. In this paper, we report deep sub-wavelength focusing via dispersion engineering based on hyperbolic metamaterials. Hyperbolic metamaterials, which can be realized by alternating layers of metal and dielectric, are materials showing opposite signs of effective permittivity along the rad...

Field-effect induced tunability in hyperbolic metamaterials

We demonstrate that use of the field effect enables tuning of the effective optical parameters of a layered hyperbolic metamaterial at optical frequencies. Field-effect gating electrically modulates the permittivity in transparent conductive oxides via changes in the carrier density. These permittivity changes lead to active modulation of the effective electromagnetic parameters along with acti...

Spatial dispersion of multilayer fishnet metamaterials.

We study the anisotropic properties of multilayer fishnet optical metamaterials and describe topological transitions between the elliptic and hyperbolic dispersion regimes. In contrast to other hyperbolic media, multilayer fishnet metamaterials may have negative components not only in the effective permittivity tensor but also in the effective permeability tensor, thus allowing the realization ...

Space-coiling metamaterials with double negativity and conical dispersion

Metamaterials are effectively homogeneous materials that display extraordinary dispersion. Negative index metamaterials, zero index metamaterials and extremely anisotropic metamaterials are just a few examples. Instead of using locally resonating elements that may cause undesirable absorption, there are huge efforts to seek alternative routes to obtain these unusual properties. Here, we demonst...
