A major quantitative trait locus for increasing cadmium-specific concentration in rice grain is located on the short arm of chromosome 7

چکیده
Large phenotypic variations in the cadmium (Cd) concentration of rice grains and shoots have been observed. However, the genetic control of Cd accumulation remains poorly understood. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) determining the grain Cd concentration of rice grown in a Cd-polluted paddy field were identified. Using a mapping population consisting of 85 backcross inbred lines derived from a cross between the low-Cd-accumulating cultivar Sasanishiki (japonica) and high-Cd-accumulating cultivar Habataki (indica), two QTLs for increasing grain Cd concentration were found on chromosomes 2 and 7. A major-effect QTL, qGCd7 (QTL for grain Cd on chromosome 7), was detected on the short arm of chromosome 7. It accounted for 35.5% of all phenotypic variance in backcross inbred lines. qGCd7 was not genetically related to any QTLs for concentrations of essential trace metals (Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) or those for agronomic traits such as heading date, suggesting that this QTL is specific to Cd. Furthermore, the existence of qGCd7 was confirmed using chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) and an F(2) population from a cross between the target CSSL and Sasanishiki grown in a Cd-polluted paddy soil. To our knowledge, qGCd7 is a novel QTL with major effects for increasing grain Cd concentrations.

Accumulation of Cd in rice grain is a serious concern of food safety since rice as a staple food is a major source of Cd intake in Asian countries. However, the mechanisms controlling Cd accumulation in rice are still poorly understood. Herein, we report both physiological and genetic analysis of two rice cultivars contrasting in Cd accumulation, which were screened from a core collection of ri...

The genetic control of grain weight (GW) remains poorly understood. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) determining the GW of rice were identified using a natural GW mutant, sgw. Using a segregating population derived from sgw (low GW) and cultivar 9311 ('9311'; indica, high GW), the chromosome segment associated with GW was detected on the short arm of chromosome 7. To validate and further refine t...

Grain hardness is the main factor for classification and end-use quality of wheat. Wheat with the hard grain texture has higher protein content and more intensive gluten that leads to production of higher bread quality. However, soft texture wheat has lower protein content and weaker gluten, which are suitable for cake and candy production. Grain hardness is determined by the Pina and Pinb gene...

Salinity is considered as one of important physical factors influencing rice (Oryza sativa L.) production. Knowledge of salinity effects on rice seedling growth and yieldcomponents would improve management practices in fields andincrease our understanding of salt tolerance mechanisms in rice. This study was designed to assess the role of Saltol QTL in regards to effects of salinity on plant gro...

A quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis was conducted on grain appearance in Emi-no-kizuna, a rice cultivar that has superior and stable appearance of the brown rice grain and high tolerance to high temperature stress, by using F3 lines derived from Emi-no-kizuna and Tomohonami. The investigation was performed 2013 and 2015. In summer 2013 the air temperature was higher and the larger differe...
