The use of plastic tubing in roller pumps.

چکیده
If plastic tubing is to be used in roller pumps for propelling blood in extracorporeal circulations under occlusive conditions spring loading the rollers and accurately setting the spring force is essential. Various types and sizes of plastic tubing are compared and their performance estimated; rubber tubing used for the same purpose has been tested. The optimum spring force has been determined both for plastic and for rubber tubing.

A Comparison of Static Occlusion Setting Methods : Fluid Drop Rate and Pressure Drop
Tubing circuits primed with water were constructed on two roller pumps to characterize and compare two static methods of setting the occlusion on roller pumps (fluid drop rate and pressure drop rate). Twelve separate experiments were performed in which PVC boot tubing diameters (1/2 in, 3/8 in and 1/4 in), roller position (each roller alone on a two roller pump) and roller occlusion (total occl...
متن کاملThe Impact of Roller Pump vs. Centrifugal Pump on Homologous Blood Transfusion in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
Centrifugal pumps are considered to be less destructive to blood elements (1) when compared to roller pumps. However, their large prime volumes render them unsuitable as arterial pumps in heart lung machine (HLM) circuitry for children. In November of 2014, the circuit at Arnold Palmer Hospital, a Biomedicus BP-50 with kinetic assist venous drainage (KAVD) and 1/4″ tubing was converted to a rol...
متن کاملRupture of extra-corporeal circuit tubing during cardiopulmonary bypass.
Roller pumps are widely used for cardiopulmonary bypass in developing nations by virtue of proven safety during several years of institutional use and cost effectiveness. However, careful adjustment of roller occlusion is needed because they are known to cause spallation, tubing wear, and the occasional incident of rupture of tubing in the extracorporeal circuit. Rupture of polyvinylchloride tu...
متن کاملSignificant safety advantages gained with an improved pressure-regulated blood pump.
A prototype of a non-occlusive pressure-regulated blood pump (M-pump) was evaluated in-vitro for safety in a comparative study with the roller and centrifugal pumps. The M-pump consists of collapsible tubing of unique design wrapped under tension around a rotor without a stator. The prototype M-pumps were tested in vitro to evaluate performance with respect to flow/ pressure characteristics, he...
متن کاملElectrostatic potential generated during extracorporeal pump prime circulation before cardiopulmonary bypass initiation.
The development of electrostatic potentials generated during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) procedures using polyvinylchloride (PVC) tubing in conjunction with roller pumps has been previously documented. The resulting damage from the electrostatic discharge (ESD) has been reported to affect gas transfer devices, but details of potential damage to electronic components commonly used during extrac...
