چکیده

The particles emitted from vehicular exhaust usually include particles less than 10 micron diameter (PM10) which get accumulated in the lungs and produce respiratory impairments. This study was taken up to assess the effect of vehicular exhaust on their pulmonary functions readings. The spirometric analysis of traffic policemen revealed FEV1 2.35 L, FVC 3.19L and PEF 7.8 L/s when compared with those with controls in whom the values of FEV1, FVC and PEF were 4.20 L, 4.45 L and 8.47 L/s, respectively. The odd ratio for breathlessness, cough with expectoration, chest pain and irritation of therespiratory tract were 6.6, 3.7, 3.0 and 2.8 respectively. In the present study, we find rise of ambient air pollution as a result of vehicular pollution which may result in respiratory impairment of traffic policemen. It may be due to prolonged exposure of vehicular pollution, which causes a reduction in the lung function efficiency.

Genetic effects of air pollutants: insights from human biomonitoring studies.

In this issue Sree Devi and coworkers1 report the results of a cytogenetic investigation on traffic policemen from an Indian metropolitan area. The study shows a distinct excess of cytogenetic damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of policemen compared to indoor workers, highlighting the genotoxic consequences of the exposure to urban air pollutants. Genetic damage, for the severity and irreve...

Traffic-related air pollution. A pilot exposure assessment in Beirut, Lebanon.

Traffic-related volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pollution has frequently been demonstrated to be a serious problem in the developing countries. Benzene and 1,3-butadiene (BD) have been classified as a human carcinogen based on evidence for an increased genotoxic and epigenotoxic effects in both occupational exposure assessment and in vivo/in vitro studies. We have undertaken a biomonitoring o...

Preliminary study to explore gene-PM2.5 interactive effects on respiratory system in traffic policemen.

OBJECTIVES Traffic-related particulate matter (PM) is one of the major sources of air pollution in metropolitan areas. This study is to observe the interactive effects of gene and fine particles (particles smaller than 2.5 μm - PM2.5) on the respiratory system and explore the mechanisms linking PM2.5 and pulmonary injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS The participants include 110 traffic policemen and...
