چکیده

Results are presented for [C ii] 158μm line fluxes observed with the Herschel PACS instrument in 112 sources with both starburst and active galactic nucleus (AGN) classifications, of which 102 sources have confident detections. Results are compared with mid-infrared spectra from the Spitzer Infrared Spectrometer and with Lir from IRAS fluxes; AGN/starburst classifications are determined from equivalent width of the 6.2μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) feature. It is found that the [C ii] line flux correlates closely with the flux of the 11.3μm PAH feature independent of AGN/starburst classification, log [f([C ii] 158μm)/f(11.3μm PAH)] = −0.22 ± 0.25. It is concluded that the [C ii] line flux measures the photodissociation region associated with starbursts in the same fashion as the PAH feature. A calibration of star formation rate (SFR) for the starburst component in any source having [C ii] is derived comparing [C ii] luminosity L([C ii]) to Lir with the result that log SFR = log L([C ii)]) − 7.08± 0.3, for SFR inM yr−1 andL([C ii]) inL . The decreasing ratio ofL([C ii]) to Lir in more luminous sources (the “[C ii] deficit”) is shown to be a consequence of the dominant contribution to Lir arising from a luminous AGN component because the sources with the largest Lir and smallest L([C ii])/Lir are AGNs.

Confirming a population of hot-dust dominated, star-forming, ultraluminous galaxies at high redshift

We identify eight z > 1 radio sources undetected at 850 μm but robustly detected at 70 μm, confirming that they represent ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with hotter dust temperatures (〈T d〉 = 52 ± 10 K) than submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) at similar luminosities and redshifts. These galaxies share many properties with SMGs: ultraviolet spectra consistent with starbursts, high stellar m...

Hidden starbursts and active galactic nuclei at 0 < z < 4 from the Herschel ⋆ - VVDS - CFHTLS - D 1 field : Inferences on coevolution and feedback ⋆ ⋆

We investigate of the properties of ∼2000 Herschel/SPIRE far-infrared-selected galaxies from 0 < z < 4 in the CFHTLS-D1 field. Using a combination of extensive spectroscopy from the VVDS and ORELSE surveys, deep multiwavelength imaging from CFHT, VLA, Spitzer, XMM-Newton, and Herschel, and well-calibrated spectral energy distribution fitting, Herschel-bright galaxies are compared to optically-s...

Stellar Populations in Active Galaxies

The role of stars and starbursts in AGN has been a recurring issue for nearly as long as AGN have been recognized as hosts of interesting phenomena. The heated “starburst versus monster” controversy of the 80’s and 90’s was gradually replaced by “starburst plus monster” studies, as observational work in the past decade has firmly established that accretion onto a super-massive black-hole and st...

Submillimeter evidence for the coeval growth of massive black holes and galaxy bulges.

The correlation, found in nearby galaxies, between black hole mass and stellar bulge mass implies that the formation of these two components must be related. Here we report submillimeter photometry of eight x-ray-absorbed active galactic nuclei that have luminosities and redshifts characteristic of the sources that produce the bulk of the accretion luminosity in the universe. The four sources w...

THE PHYSICAL CONNECTIONS AMONG IR QSOs, PG QSOs AND NARROW-LINE SEYFERT 1 GALAXIES

We study the properties of infrared-selected QSOs (IR QSOs), opticallyselected QSOs (PG QSOs) and Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). We compare their properties from the infrared to the optical and examine various correlations among the black hole mass, accretion rate, star formation rate and optical and infrared luminosities. We find that the infrared excess in IR QSOs is mostly in the fa...
