چکیده

[1] Cirrus clouds, thin ice clouds in the upper troposphere, have a net warming effect on Earth’s climate. Consequently, a reduction in cirrus cloud amount or optical thickness would cool the climate. Recent research indicates that by seeding cirrus clouds with particles that promote ice nucleation, their lifetimes and coverage could be reduced. We have tested this hypothesis in a global climate model with a state-of-the-art representation of cirrus clouds and find that cirrus cloud seeding has the potential to cancel the entire warming caused by human activity from pre-industrial times to present day. However, the desired effect is only obtained for seeding particle concentrations that lie within an optimal range. With lower than optimal particle concentrations, a seeding exercise would have no effect. Moreover, a higher than optimal concentration results in an over-seeding that could have the deleterious effect of prolonging cirrus lifetime and contributing to global warming. Cirrus cloud seeding: a climate engineering mechanism with reduced side effects?

Climate engineering, the intentional alteration of Earth's climate, is a multifaceted and controversial topic. Numerous climate engineering mechanisms (CEMs) have been proposed, and the efficacies and potential undesired consequences of some of them have been studied in the safe environments of numerical models. Here, we present a global modelling study of a so far understudied CEM, namely the ...

Cirrus cloud susceptibility to the injection of ice nuclei in the upper troposphere

Due to their net warming effect, cirrus clouds play a crucial role in the climate system. A recently proposed climate engineering mechanism (CEM) intends to reduce high cloud cover by seeding cirrus clouds with efficient ice nuclei (IN) and therefore cool climate. Here, the susceptibility of cirrus clouds to the injection of ice nuclei in the upper troposphere is investigated in the extended Co...

The climatic effects of modifying cirrus clouds in a climate engineering framework

The climatic effects of climate engineering—or geoengineering—via cirrus cloud thinning are examined. Thinner cirrus clouds can allowmore outgoing longwave radiation to escape to space, potentially cooling the climate. The cloud properties and climatic effects due to perturbing the ice crystal fall speed are investigated in a set of hemispheric scale sensitivity experiments with the Community E...

Cirrus Detrainment-Temperature Feedback

In considering the role of cirriform clouds in climate change, it is important to distinguish among the relationships of different high cloud types to large-scale atmospheric dynamics. While cirrostratus and cirrocumulus (CsCc) have a clear relation to deep convective sources, the ensemble behavior of cirrus is more subtle. An empirical relation is found between cirrus fraction and deep cloud t...

In this chapter I present an overview of the concepts and status of the science of weather and climate engineering. I begin by discussing the concepts of seeding clouds through glaciogenic and hygroscopic seeding. I review the status of research on these concepts for increasing rainfall, decreasing hail damage, and reducing hurricane intensity. Thereafter I present an overview of the concepts f...
