چکیده

PURPOSE To validate the use of the ratio between the total transverse diameters of the thyroid lobes (Th) and the width of the trachea (Tr)-the Th:Tr or Yasumoto ratio-as a sonographic method for estimating thyroid size, and to determine reference values for this ratio and for thyroid volume in neonates. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated thyroid size according to the Yasumoto ratio and the thyroid volume calculated with the ellipsoid formula in 125 healthy, euthyroid, iodine-sufficient, full-term neonates. RESULTS The mean thyroid gland volume was 1.00 ml (95% confidence interval, 0.95-1.03 ml), and the mean Yasumoto ratio was 2.29 (95% confidence interval, 2.21-2.31). The lower- and upper-limit results falling within 2 SDs of the mean were 0.45 ml and 1.53 ml for the volume and 1.71 and 2.87 for the ratio. CONCLUSIONS In full-term, euthyroid, iodine-sufficient neonates, the normal reference interval for thyroid volume measured on sonography was 0.45-1.53 ml and that for the Yasumoto ratio was 1.71-2.87. A ratio of 1.7 may be applied as the cutoff value for sonographic diagnosis of thyroid dysgenesis in full-term neonates with congenital hypothyroidism. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract Background :  Iatrogenic recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury is an uncommon but serious complication of Head and neck surgery and also thoracic procedures. laryngoscopy can be an invasive and uncomfortable procedure, therefore the use of sonography as an noninvasive method of screening patients for impaired vocal-cord mobility is desirable. The aim of this study was to assess ...

The Frequency and Characteristics of Hypothyroidism Jaundice in Neonates with Hyperbilirubinemia; A Ten-Year Survey

Background & Aims: Congenital hypothyroidism is a serious disorder that could be treated if detected early. Jaundice is one of the symptoms of these neonates. However, the prevalence, clinical course and severity of jaundice are not yet well defined. We compared the clinical course and severity of jaundice in a case-controlstudy of congenital hypothyroidism and other neonates of unknown etiolog...

Ultrasound Measurement of Kidney Dimensions in Premature Neonates

Background Ultrasonography is a non-invasive and accurate diagnostic method to evaluate urinary system and its anomalies in the neonates. Kidney sonographic measurement can be used as an alternative method to estimate gestational age. The aim of this study was to measure kidney size in preterm neonates and to provide a guide reference for gestational age. <...

Associations of the BRAFV600E Mutation with Sonographic Features and Clinicopathologic Characteristics in a Large Population with Conventional Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association of the BRAF(V600E) mutation with sonographic features and clinicopathologic characteristics in a large population with conventional papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the sonographic features, clinicopathologic characteristics, and presence of the BRAF(V600E) mutation in 688 patients who underwent thyroidectomy for conv...

Ultrasonography of thyroid nodules: a pictorial review

UNLABELLED Thyroid nodules are a common occurrence in the general population, and these incidental thyroid nodules are often referred for ultrasound (US) evaluation. US provides a safe and fast method of examination. It is sensitive for the detection of thyroid nodules, and suspicious features can be used to guide further investigation/management decisions. However, given the financial burden o...
