چکیده

Large information spaces such as the WWW face the problem of how to maintain data warehouses (views) de ned over Information Sources (ISs) whenever capabilities of these ISs change. We have developed a novel solution approach to address this problem, called the Evolvable View Environment (EVE). In EVE, knowledge of both the capabilities of as well as (partial) containment relationships between ISs is collected in a Meta Knowledge Base (MKB). The accuracy and consistency of the MKB has great importance to the EVE framework, because the MKB serves as an information pool enabling EVE to nd alternative replacements for components of views that have become affected by IS capability changes. In this paper, we describe the meta knowledge management problem and focus on issues related to the MKB evolution process. The contributions of this paper are threefold. In this paper, we rst formally de ne consistency criteria for the MKB evolution process. Second, we use PC constraint evolution to demonstrate our MKB evolution process. Third, we discuss techniques of keeping the MKB as powerful as possible by deriving and preserving minimal implicit knowledge from the a ected explicit meta knowledge, before retracting the latter. This work was supported in part by the NSF NYI grant #IRI 94-57609. Dr. Rundensteiner would also like to thank IBM for the IBM Partnership Award.

Data Warehouse and Master Data Management Evolution – a Meta-data-vault Approach

The paper presents a: a) brief overview and analysis of existing approaches to the data warehouse (DW) evolution problem, and b) detailed description of the research idea for the DW evolution problem (primarily intended for structured data sources and realizations with relational database engines). We observe the DW evolution problem as a double issue from the DW perspective, and from the maste...

An ETL Metadata Model for Data Warehousing

Metadata is essential for understanding information stored in data warehouses. It helps increase levels of adoption and usage of data warehouse data by knowledge workers and decision makers. A metadata model is important to the implementation of a data warehouse; the lack of a metadata model can lead to quality concerns about the data warehouse. A highly successful data warehouse implementation...

Data warehouse process management

− Previous research has provided metadata models that enable the capturing of the static components of a data warehouse architecture, along with information on different quality factors over these components. This paper complements this work with the modeling of the dynamic parts of the data warehouse. The proposed metamodel of data warehouse operational processes is capable of modeling complex...

Repository Support for Data Warehouse Evolution

Data warehouses are complex systems consisting of many components which store highlyaggregated data for decision support. Due to the role of the data warehouses in the daily business work of an enterprise, the requirements for the design and the implementation are dynamic and subjective. Therefore, data warehouse design is a continuous process which has to reflect the changing environment of a ...
