چکیده

The use of industrial by-products as admixture to ASTM Type I cement (ordinary Portland cement (OPC)) was investigated with the objective of improving the solidification of organic marine clayey soils. The industrial by-products considered in this paper were oyster-shell powder (OSP), steelmaking slag dust (SMS) and fuel-gas-desulfurized (FGD) gypsum. The industrial by-products were added to OPC at a ratio of 5% based on dry weight to produce a mixture used to solidify organic marine clayey soils. The dosage ratios of mixtures to organic marine clayey soils were 5, 10 and 15% on a dry weight basis. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test after 28 days revealed that the highest strength was obtained with the OPC + SMS 15% mixing ratio. The UCS of specimens treated with this mixture was >500 kPa, compared with 300 kPa for specimens treated with a 15% OPC + OSP mixture and 200 kPa when 15% of OPC was used alone. These results were attributed to the more active hydration and pozzolanic reaction of the OPC + SMS mixture. This hypothesis was verified through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses, and was confirmed by variations in the calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) content of the materials during curing.

The Effect of Geopolymerization on the Unconfined Compressive Strength of Stabilized Fine-grained Soils

This study focuses on evaluating the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of improved fine-grained soils. A large database of unconfined compressive strength of clayey soil specimens stabilized with fly ash and blast furnace slag based geopolymer were collected and analyzed. Subsequently, using adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), a model has been developed to assess the UCS of stabi...

Stabilisation/Solidification of Pb Polluted Soils: Influence of Contamination Level and Soil:Binder Ratio on the Properties of Cement-Fly Ash Treated Soils

Two soils spiked with lead at different rates were stabilised/solidified using Portland cement and fly ash at different soil:binder ratios and tested for their setting time, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), leachability and durability. Results show that soil texture, percentage of binders and lead concentration play an important part in the treatment, significantly influencing the perform...

Curing Time Effect on Behavior of Cement Treated Marine Clay

Cement stabilization has been widely used for improving the strength and stiffness of soft clayey soils. Cement treated soil specimens used to investigate the stress-strain behaviour in the laboratory study are usually cured for 7 days. This paper examines the effects of curing time on the strength and stress strain behaviour of cement treated marine clay under triaxial loading condition. Labor...

The Effect of Rice Husk Ash on Mechanical Properties of Clayey Soils Stabilized with Lime in the Presence of Sulphate

Geotechnical engineers, in many cases face with low strength or high swelling potential of clayey soils. Stabilization methods are used to improve the mechanical properties of this type of soils. Lime and cement are the most popular materials used in chemical stabilization of clayey soils. If sulphate exists in the stabilized clayey soil with lime, or if soil is exposed to sulphates, problems s...

Stimulation Behaviour Study on Clay Treated with Ground Granulated Blast Slag and Groundnutshell Ash

The major decision in construction process involves the selection of suitable site with best soil conditions, as structure resides in the soil. Most problematic soils like expansive soils hardly proved to be the best engineering subgrade profile for pavement constructions. Thus, this has undeniably led to the soil improvement options accompanying the reduction in resource depletion and solid wa...
