چکیده
In the past few years, articles in the New England Journal of Medicine,' the Journal ofthe American Medical Association,^ and the Journal ofthe American Geriatrics Society^ have suggested that feeding tubes are substantially overused in patients with advanced dementia or other serious illnesses. Contrary to common understanding, artificial feeding often does not improve the patient's nutrition or ability to function,'' The feeding tube, in fact, may not be providing any benefit to the patient in terms of length or quality of life. Although the overuse of feeding tubes is troubling in some respects, it is reassuring in one important way. It indicates that slippery slope concerns about the "right to die" may be exaggerated. Pulling up the runaway: the effect of new evidence on euthanasia's slippery slope.
The slippery slope argument has been the mainstay of many of those opposed to the legalisation of physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia. In this paper I re-examine the slippery slope in the light of two recent studies that examined the prevalence of medical decisions concerning the end of life in the Netherlands and in Australia. I argue that these two studies have robbed the slippery slope...
متن کاملPhysician-assisted suicide: three crucial distinctions.
In Part I discusses whether there is a sustainable distinction between withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining measures and physician-assisted suicide. By segregating those who choose to end their lives into two groups, albeit with considerable overlap, the state can exert its general interest in preserving life and preventing suicide where it has the greatest interest and justification for ...

Slippery-slope arguments typically question a course of action by estimating that it will end in misery once the first unfortunate step is taken. Previous studies indicate that estimations of the long-term consequences of certain debated actions, such as legalizing physician-assisted suicide, may be strongly influenced by tacit personal values. In this paper, we suggest that to the extent that ...
متن کاملPhysician-assisted Dying and the Slippery Slope: the Challenge of Empirical Evidence
Direct physician-assisted dying, typically called physicianassisted suicide by opponents and aid in dying by proponents, is of increasing salience for at least two reasons: legal evolution and changing demographics. As of this writing, physician-assisted dying has been legal in Oregon for a decade. Known as Measure 16 at the ballot box, the Death with Dignity Act (ODDA, or, in Oregon, DWDA) pas...
متن کاملPhysician assisted suicide: the great Canadian euthanasia debate.
A substantial majority of Canadians favours a change to the Criminal Code which would make it legally permissible, subject to careful regulation, for patients suffering from incurable physical illness to opt for either physician assisted suicide (PAS) or voluntary active euthanasia (VAE). This discussion will focus primarily on the arguments for and against decriminalizing physician assisted su...
