A Multi - Stage Approach to Air - Rail Competition : Focus on 1 Rail Agency

چکیده
7 This paper proposes a three-stage game-theoretic model to study air-rail competition in intercity 8 passenger corridors. We consider duopolistic markets, in which a rail agency competes against an airline to 9 maximize their respective objectives. The objective of the rail agency can be maximizing profit or social welfare, 10 or a mix of the two. At the top stage, the rail agency first determines the train technology, which presents its 11 most strategic decision. Then the rail agency and the airline compete sequentially on frequency and fare. We 12 find that, from the operational standpoint, high speed rail (HSR) is always the best technology choice, 13 conditional on availability of high speed infrastructure. This is invariant to the objective of the rail agency. The 14 rail agency focusing more on social welfare will benefit passengers through reduced fare and greater frequency. 15 Rail will also gain more demand and a higher market share. Improving rail stations access is found to have 16 significant impact on rail market share. The impact of rail access time on the rail agency’s objective diminishes 17 with corridor distance. 18 19

The ability to perform rolling contact fatigue (RCF) experiments in wheel–rail material is provided by a new small–scale test rig, manifesting the actual dynamic behaviour of the railway system. In this paper, a multi-body dynamics (MBD) model is proposed, simulating the vibration behaviour of the prescribed rig. The new testing facility is modelled using a three-dimensional model of the vehicl...

Wheel/rail contact simulation is one of the most complicated problems in the modeling of railway vehicles. The wheel/rail interaction plays a unique role in rail vehicle dynamics. In this paper, the dynamic response of the wheel on irregular rail track is analyzed with analytical approach using the method of Multiple Scales (MMS). The Hertzian contact theory is used to obtain the relationshi...

There is a significant interaction between sizing a fleet of rail cars and its utilization. This paper presents a new multi-period mathematical model and a solution procedure to optimize the rail-car fleet size and freight car allocation, wherein car demands, and travel times, are assumed to be deterministic, and unmet demands are backordered. This problem is considered NP-complete. In other wo...
