چکیده

from the regional ocean modeling system (ROMS), has three one-way nested domains with the finest resolution of 1.6 km in the horizontal direction and 32 levels in the vertical direction. In present research, the tidal simulation of the system is validated against tide gauges, ADCP current observations, high-frequency radar surface-current observations, and compared with the output from two barotropic tidal models. The results indicate that the barotropic tides from the model compare well with observations in terms of sea-surface height, with discrepancies in amplitude of less than 10% of the amplitude of the most energetic M2 constituent. However, the discrepancy for the barotropic tidal currents can reach 30% among models with similar accuracy in sea-surface height. The generation and propagation of baroclinic tides associated with the Monterey Submarine Canyon are qualitatively reproduced by the model with weaker strength. The surface tidal current simulation is improved, especially in terms of magnitude, when the model has a more realistic stratification through changes in both barotropic and baroclinic tidal currents. & 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Numerical simulation of internal tides and the resulting energetics within Monterey Bay and the surrounding area

[1] We use a three-dimensional nonhydrostatic unstructuredgrid code to simulate internal tides within Monterey Bay. The predicted water surface, barotropic and baroclinic velocities, and internal tides in the greater coastal region agree with observations. The agreement is due to the use of a high-resolution mesh, alongshore prescription of the barotropic M2 tidal velocities, and specification ...

Field Measurements and 3D Numerical Modeling of Hydrodynamics in Chabahar Bay, Iran

As the first phase of a series of monitoring and modeling studies of Iranian coastal areas, Chabahar Bay, located on the north coast of the Gulf of Oman, was under a comprehensive monitoring and modeling study in 2006-2007. The study included an extensive one-year field measurements program to help understanding the ongoing processes in the bay and provide inputs or boundary conditions and vali...

Can vertical migrations of dinoflagellates explain observed bioluminescence patterns during an upwelling event in Monterey Bay, California?

[1] Extensive AUVs surveys showed that during the development of upwelling, bioluminescent dinoflagellates from the northern part of the Monterey Bay, California (called the upwelling shadow area), were able to avoid advection by southward flowing currents along the entrance to the Bay, while non-bioluminescent phytoplankton were advected by currents. It is known that vertical swimming of dinof...

Observations of internal wave packets propagating along‐shelf in northern Monterey Bay

[1] Internal waves of depression were observed propagating along‐shelf and into northern Monterey Bay, California (CA) on the inner shelf. These waves had amplitudes approximately equal to the thermocline depth (∼4 m), and were unstable to shear and mix the thermocline. Isopycnal gradient spectra showed that the wave packets lead to an elevated mean dissipation rate of " = 2.63 × 10 m s for up ...

Mass Stranding of Marine Birds Caused by a Surfactant-Producing Red Tide

In November-December 2007 a widespread seabird mortality event occurred in Monterey Bay, California, USA, coincident with a massive red tide caused by the dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea. Affected birds had a slimy yellow-green material on their feathers, which were saturated with water, and they were severely hypothermic. We determined that foam containing surfactant-like proteins, derived f...
