Personalized Adaptive Interfaces
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Mass-produced user interfaces are inadequate for today’s computing needs: interfaces shipped with today’s complex applications are designed in a “one size fits all” manner and by aiming to address the needs of the average user they miss essential needs of most individual users. In particular, I note that: • users own diverse display-equipped devices, which support different interaction methods and have displays varying in size over several orders of magnitude; • different users use the same software to accomplish different tasks; • people’s work habits change over time; • users differ in their perceptual, physical and cognitive abilities.

A Platform For Automatically Generating Personalized User Interfaces
I am broadly interested in human computer interaction, machine learning and artificial intelligence. My dissertation demonstrates how to automatically generate personalized adaptive user interfaces. My central thesis is that personalized user interfaces, which are adapted to a person’s devices, tasks, preferences and abilities, can improve user satisfaction and performance. Further, I demonstra...
متن کاملBeyond performance: Feature awareness in personalized interfaces
Personalized graphical user interfaces have the potential to reduce visual complexity and improve interaction efficiency by tailoring elements such as menus and toolbars to better suit an individual user's needs. When an interface is personalized to make useful features more accessible for a user's current task, however, there may be a negative impact on the user's awareness of the full set of ...
متن کاملDecision-Theoretic User Interface Generation
For decades, researchers have debated the pros and cons of adaptive user interfaces with enthusiastic AI practitioners often confronting skeptical HCI experts (Shneiderman & Maes, 1997). This paper summarizes the SUPPLE project’s six years of work analyzing the characteristics of successful adaptive interfaces and developing efficient algorithms for their automatic generation (Gajos & Weld, 200...

Automatically Generating Personalized User Interfaces Krzysztof Z. Gajos Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Daniel S. Weld Computer Science and Engineering User Interfaces for today’s software are usually created in a one-size-fits-all manner, making implicit assumptions about the needs, abilities, and preferences of the “average user” and the characteristics of the “average device.”...
متن کاملControllability matters: The user experience of adaptive maps
Adaptive map interfaces have the potential of increasing usability by providing more task dependent and personalized support. It is unclear, however, how map adaptation must be designed to avoid a loss of control, transparency, and predictability. This article investigates the user experience of adaptive map interfaces in the context of gaze-based activity recognition. In a Wizard of Oz experim...
متن کاملA Improving Performance, Perceived Usability, and Aesthetics with Culturally Adaptive User Interfaces1
When we investigate the usability and aesthetics of user interfaces, we rarely take into account that what users perceive as beautiful and usable strongly depends on their cultural background. In this paper, we argue that it is not feasible to design one interface that appeals to all users of an increasingly global audience. Instead, we propose to design culturally adaptive systems, which autom...
