چکیده

Here we develop a numerical model to investigate the hypothesis proposed by a companion paper [Eltahir, this issue], which describes a soil moisture–rainfall feedback mechanism. The model is designed to describe the seasonal evolution of the West African monsoon rainfall and is used to perform numerical experiments that elucidate the mechanisms of the response of rainfall to soil moisture anomalies. A significant rainfall anomaly is simulated by the model in response to a hypothetical soil moisture anomaly that has been imposed during early summer. However, the magnitude of this anomaly almost vanishes when the net radiation at the surface is not allowed to respond to the soil moisture anomaly. Hence the results of the numerical experiments support the proposed hypothesis and highlight the crucial importance of the radiative and dynamical feedbacks in regulating the rainfall anomalies that result from the soil moisture anomalies.

A soil moisture–rainfall feedback mechanism 1. Theory and observations

This paper presents a hypothesis regarding the fundamental role of soil moisture conditions in land-atmosphere interactions. We propose that wet soil moisture conditions over any large region should be associated with relatively large boundary layer moist static energy, which favors the occurrence of more rainfall. Since soil moisture conditions themselves reflect past occurrence of rainfall, t...

An analysis of the soil moisture-rainfall feedback, based on direct observations from Illinois

Many global and regional climate modeling studies have demonstrated the importance of the initial soil water condition in their simulations of regional rainfall distribution. However, none of these modeling studies has been tested against directly observed data. This study tests the hypothesis that soil saturation is positively correlated with subsequent precipitation by analyzing a 14-year soi...

Investigation of Rainfall-Runoff Processes and Soil Moisture Dynamics in Grassland Plots under Simulated Rainfall Conditions

The characteristics of rainfall-runoff are important aspects of hydrological processes. In this study, rainfall-runoff processes and soil moisture dynamics at different soil depths and slope positions of grassland with two different row spacings (5 cm and 10 cm, respectively, referred to as R5 and R10) were analyzed, by means of a solution of rainfall simulation experiments. Bare land was also ...

Probability of afternoon precipitation in eastern United States and Mexico enhanced by high evaporation

Moisture and heat fluxes from the land surface to the atmosphere form a critical nexus between surface hydrology and atmospheric processes, particularly those relevant to precipitation. Although current theory suggests that soil moisture generally has a positive impact on subsequent precipitation, individual studies have shown support both for1–4 and against5–7 this positive feedback. Broad ass...

Biophysical Feedbacks on the Regional Climate System

Experiments with coupled atmosphere/biosphere models indicate that land degradation leads to a reduction in rainfall, evapotranspiration, soil moisture and runoff, and an increase in surface temperature and near surface winds. This talk discusses studies that have investigated the feedback of degradation in forest and other ecosystems on regional climate in the Sahel, the central U.S., South Am...
