A Computational Model of Evolution: Haploidy versus Diploidy

چکیده
In this paper the study of diploidy is introduced like an important mechanism for memory reinforcement in arti cial environments where adaptation is very important For this study it has been simulated an ecosystem of birds The individuals of this ecosystem are able to geneti cally learn the best behaviour for survival Critical changes happening in the environmental conditions require the presence of diploidy to ensure the survival of species By means of new gene dominance con gurations a way to shield the individuals from erroneous selection is provided These two concepts appear like important elements for arti cial systems which have to evolve in environments with some degree of instability

Recombination and the evolution of diploidy.
With two copies of every gene, a diploid organism is able to mask recessive deleterious mutations. In this paper we present the analysis of a two-locus model designed to determine when the masking of deleterious alleles favors the evolution of a dominant diploid phase in organisms that alternate between haploid and diploid phases ("alternation of generations"). It is hypothesized that diploidy ...
متن کاملEffects of Ploidy and Recombination on Evolution of Robustness in a Model of the Segment Polarity Network
Many genetic networks are astonishingly robust to quantitative variation, allowing these networks to continue functioning in the face of mutation and environmental perturbation. However, the evolution of such robustness remains poorly understood for real genetic networks. Here we explore whether and how ploidy and recombination affect the evolution of robustness in a detailed computational mode...
متن کاملFinite Population Models of Co-evolution and Their Application to Haploidy versus Diploidy
In order to study genetic algorithms in co-evolutionary environments, we construct a Markov model of co-evolution of populations with fixed, finite population sizes. In this combined Markov model, the behavior toward the limit can be utilized to study the relative performance of the algorithms. As an application of the model, we perform an analysis of the relative performance of haploid versus ...
متن کاملThe evolution of haploidy and diploidy
Tremendous diversity exists among organisms with respect to their ploidy level, defined as the number of sets of homologous chromosomes per cell. As differences in ploidy represent a potentially major genomic change affecting the evolution of a species, it might be thought that ploidy evolution would be well understood. In fact, our knowledge is fragmentary, and there are several open questions...
متن کاملMating systems and the evolutionary transition between haploidy and diploidy
According to the ‘masking hypothesis’, diploids gain an immediate fitness advantage over haploids because diploids, with two copies of every gene, are better able to survive the effects of deleterious recessive mutations. Masking in diploids is, however, a double-edged sword: it allows mutations to persist over time. In contrast, deleterious mutations are revealed in haploid individuals and are...
