چکیده

A number of climate modeling studies have been conducted at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory to study the irlteraction of continental ice sheets with the climate system. This paper reviews some! of the primary results from these studies. Substantial changes in atmospheric circul~~tion, location and intensity of storm tracks, precipitation distribution, sea surface temlperature, sea ice extent, and soil moisture occur in response to the ice sheets of the Ic~st glacial maximum. Estimates of the mass budgets of these ice sheets suggest that they are not in equilibrium with the simulated LGM climate, although questions regardinlg the refreezing of surface meltwater make this result uncertain. Results from climate model experiments with and without orography suggest that orographic uplift could have produced a climate slightly more favorable for ice sheet initiation.

Sea ice feedback and Cenozoic evolution of Antarctic climate and ice sheets

[1] The extent and thickness of Antarctic sea ice have important climatic effects on radiation balance, energy transfer between the atmosphere and ocean, and moisture availability. This paper explores the role of sea ice and related feedbacks in the Cenozoic evolution of Antarctic climate and ice sheets, using a numerical climate model with explicit, dynamical representations of sea ice and con...

Coupled climate modelling of ocean circulation changes during ice age inception

Freshening of high latitude surface waters can change the large-scale oceanic transport of heat and salt. Consequently, atmospheric and sea ice perturbations over the deep water production sites excite a large-scale response establishing an oceanic ‘‘teleconnection’’ with time scales of years to centuries. To study these feedbacks, a coupled atmosphere-ocean-sea ice model consisting of a two di...

The climate of the Last Glacial Maximum: Results from a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model

Results from a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model simulation of the Last Glacial Maximum reveal annual mean continental cooling between 48 and 78C over tropical landmasses, up to 268 of cooling over the Laurentide ice sheet, and a global mean temperature depression of 4.38C. The simulation incorporates glacial ice sheets, glacial land surface, reduced sea level, 21 ka orbital pa...

Large-scale instabilities of the Laurentide ice sheet simulated in a fully coupled climate-system model

[1] Heinrich events, related to large-scale surges of the Laurentide ice sheet, represent one of the most dramatic types of abrupt climate change occurring during the last glacial. Here, using a coupled atmosphere-ocean-biosphereice sheet model, we simulate quasi-periodic large-scale surges from the Laurentide ice sheet. The average time between simulated events is about 7,000 yrs, while the su...

The Influence of Continental Ice Sheets on the Climate of an Ice Age

The climate influence of the land ice that existed 18,000 years before present (18K B.P.) is investigated by use of a general circulation model of the atmosphere coupled with a static mixed layer ocean. Simulated climates are obtained from two versions of the model: one with the land ice distribution of the present and the other with that of 18K B.P. In the northern hemisphere the tropospheric ...
