چکیده

We have built a system that automatically generates camera actions for storytelling in virtual environments. Given a sequence of character actions, scene properties (like mood, tempo, etc), and a mapping from names to characters, objects, and locations in a graphical world, the goal of a camera planning system is to generate sequences of directives for the camera to satisfy derived from certain communicative goals that are input by the author. For this test case, we developed a specific implementation of the problem. For generating camera shot directives, we considered a library of character actions (specifically walk, say, and point/wave), attributes to annotate scenes, characters and stories, and communicative goals. For the demonstration we restricted ourselves to conversational settings within stories. Camera directives were generated by a planning system. The plan was then fed to a modified version of the Unreal Tournament 2003 game engine (hereafter as UT) where it was executed. Our choice of conversational setting enables us to compare and contrast the effect of feeding different parameters to the planning system for the same basic scene.

A Discourse Planning Approach to Cinematic Camera Control for Narratives in Virtual Environments

As the complexity of narrative-based virtual environments grows, the need for effective communication of information to the users of these systems increase. Effective camera control for narrative-oriented virtual worlds involves decision making at three different levels: choosing cinematic geometric composition, choosing the best camera parameters for conveying affective information, and choosi...

Toward a Narrative Comprehension Model of Cinematic Generation for 3D Virtual Environments

Most systems for generating cinematic shot sequences for virtual environments focus on the low-level problems of camera placement. While this approach will create a sequence of camera shots which film individual events in a virtual environment, it does not account for the high-level effects shot sequences have on viewer inferences. There are systems which are based on well known cinematography ...

Ember, Toward Salience-Based Cinematic Generation

Automatic cinematic generation for virtual environments and games has shown to be capable of generating general purpose cinematics. There is initial work that approaches cinematic generation from the perspective of narrative instead of low level camera manipulation. In our work, we further extend this idea to take into consideration a model of user memory. Models of reader comprehension and mem...

Computational Model of Film Editing for Interactive Storytelling

Generating interactive narratives as movies requires knowledge in cinematography (camera placement, framing, lighting) and film editing (cutting between cameras). We present a framework for generating a well-edited movie from interactively generated scene contents and cameras. Our system computes a sequence of shots by simultaneously choosing which camera to use, when to cut in and out of the s...
