AgNOR STAINING IN MALIGNANT AND BENIGN EFFUSIONS
نویسندگان
چکیده
Objective: To evaluate the correlation of argyrophilic nucleolar regions(AgNORs) and malignancy in benign and malignant effusions. Design: The study group consisted of pleural and peritoneal effusion samples obtained from patients suffering from various benign or malignant diseases. The cytological smears were studied by conventional haematoxylin & eosin(H&E) and silver staining for AgNORs. Setting: The samples were obtained from patients admitted in Mayo Hospital, Services Hospital, Gulab Devi Chest Hospital and Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology (INMOL). Subjects: One hundred cases having either pleural or peritoneal effusions were selected. Fifty of these cases were positive for malignant cells and fifty had reactive mesothelial cells in them. Main Outcome Measures: Assessment of AgNOR count as a diagnostic marker of malignancy. Results: AgNOR count was helpful in differentiating benign from malignant cells. AgNOR count in malignant cells was 10.62 ± 3.36 and 3.04 ± 0.64 in reactive mesothelial cells. Conclusion: AgNOR count is a rapid, easily reproducible method of differentiating reactive mesothelial cells and malignant cells.

Argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) were determined in 94 pleural, pericardial and peritoneal effusions. The results were correlated with cytologic diagnosis to determine the diagnostic potential of this technique. Cytologically the number of normal, reactive and malignant effusions were 32, 28 and 34 respectively. The mean AgNOR counts for normal, reactive and malignant spec...

BACKGROUND Serous effusion smears reported as (suspicious for malignancy) pose problems in clinical management. Silver staining for argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNOR) has proved useful in making a cytopathologic differential diagnosis between benign and malignant cells. Nucleolar organizer regions(NORs) are loops of DNA located in acrocentric chromosomes. These NORs are visualized...

BACKGROUND In conventional cytological diagnosis of pleural effusions the assessment of morphological features plays an important part. However, false negative and false positive results may occur. In this study conventional cytology was compared with flow cytometric DNA analysis and the argyrophil staining technique for nucleolar organiser regions (AgNOR) to characterise benign and malignant e...

ABSTRACT Nucleolar organizer regions(NORs) are loops of DNA included ribosomal genes that ribosomal RNA translated of it, which synthesis proteins. NORs are in short arms of acrocentric chromosomes and associated with argyrophilic proteins, which are seen as black dots, termed “AgNOR”, by using colloidal silver (Ag) staining method. AgNOR count in nucleous have direct relation with cel...

Thirty cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia and 30 cases of prostatic adenocarcinoma were selected and stained by AgNOR (argyrophilic staining of the nucleolar organizer region) method. Specimens were obtained by either prostatectomy (open!TIJR) or needle biopsy of the prostate. In this study, the sections of prostatic adenocarcinoma were reviewed. 6 cases were diagnosed as well-differen...
