چکیده

11 Deciding where to eat and raise offspring carries important fitness consequences for all 12 animals, especially if foraging, feeding and reproduction increase the risk of exposure to 13 pathogens. In insects with complete metamorphosis, foraging occurs mainly during the larval 14 stage, while oviposition decisions are taken by adult-stage females. Selection for infection 15 avoidance behaviours may therefore be developmentally uncoupled. Using a combination of 16 experimental infections and behavioural choice assays, here we tested if Drosophila 17 melanogaster fruit flies avoid potentially infectious environments at distinct developmental 18 stages. When given conspecific fly carcasses as a food source, larval-stage flies did not 19 discriminate between carcasses that were clean or infected with the pathogenic Drosophila C 20 Virus (DCV), even though scavenging was a viable route of DCV transmission. Adult females 21 however, discriminated between different oviposition sites, laying more eggs near a clean 22 rather than an infectious carcass if they were healthy; DCV-infected females did not 23 discriminate between the two environments. While potentially risky, laying eggs near 24 potentially infectious carcasses was always preferred to sites containing only fly medium. Our 25 findings suggest that infection avoidance can play an important role in how mothers provision 26 their offspring, and underline the need to consider infection avoidance behaviours at multiple 27 life-stages. 28 29 30

Carryover effects of larval exposure to different environmental bacteria drive adult trait variation in a mosquito vector

Conditions experienced during larval development of holometabolous insects can affect adult traits, but whether differences in the bacterial communities of larval development sites contribute to variation in the ability of insect vectors to transmit human pathogens is unknown. We addressed this question in the mosquito Aedes aegypti, a major arbovirus vector breeding in both sylvatic and domest...

Evolution of insect metamorphosis: a microarray-based study of larval and adult gene expression in the ant Camponotus festinatus.

Holometabolous insects inhabit almost every terrestrial ecosystem. The evolutionary success of holometabolous insects stems partly from their developmental program, which includes discrete larval and adult stages. To gain an understanding of how development differs among holometabolous insect taxa, we used cDNA microarray technology to examine differences in gene expression between larval and a...

The function and evolution of insect storage hexamers.

The storage hexamers are a family of insect proteins with native molecular weights around 500,000 with six homologous subunits weighing generally between 70,000 and 85,000 daltons. They are synthesized and secreted by the fat body of feeding larvae and nymphs and reach extraordinary concentrations in the hemolymph just prior to metamorphosis. In holometabolous insects, they are partially recapt...

Learning in Insect Pollinators and Herbivores.

The relationship between plants and insects is influenced by insects' behavioral decisions during foraging and oviposition. In mutualistic pollinators and antagonistic herbivores, past experience (learning) affects such decisions, which ultimately can impact plant fitness. The higher levels of dietary generalism in pollinators than in herbivores may be an explanation for the differences in lear...

Persistence of an extracellular systemic infection across metamorphosis in a holometabolous insect

Organisms with complex life cycles can differ markedly in their biology across developmental life stages. Consequently, distinct life stages can represent drastically different environments for parasites. This difference is especially striking with holometabolous insects, which have dramatically different larval and adult life stages, bridged by a complete metamorphosis. There is no a priori gu...
