چکیده

Xylose absorption tests were performed on patients unselected except to exclude gastrointestinal or renal disease. The proportion of xylose excreted decreases with increasing age. Intravenous xylose tests suggest that this is due to a deterioration in renal function rather than to a reduction in intestinal absorption.

Alteration of D-xylose intestinal absorption in broilers with high dietary barley intake

Low nutritive value and suitability of barley as a feedstuff for broilers is mainly due to its non-starch polysaccharides. An experiment was carried out to evaluate if diets high in barley alter the mechanisms responsible for the absorption of nutrients across the intestinal epithelium of broilers, using D-xylose absorption test. Thirty, 14-d old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) with similar body...

Differences in Intestinal Absorptive Capacity of Chickens for D-Xylose

Background: According to literature, there are differences among different species of animals in respect to absorption of D-xylose. OBJECTIVES: In two experiments, the differences that might exist in absorptive capacity of small intestine for D-xylose, in different types of chicken were tested. METHODS: In experiment one, 2 groups of nine adult layer type males (48 weeks) and females (58 weeks)...

Neonatal gut function, measured by the one hour blood D (+) xylose test: influence of gestational age and size.

D(+) Xylose absorption, assessed by one hour blood xylose levels, has been measured after intraduodenal infusion of the sugar in 35 infants of differing gestational age and size. The test was performed between the 2nd and 6th days of life. Full-term appropriately grown infants had higher blood xylose levels (1.41+/-0.07 mmol/l) at one hour than pre-term appropriately grown infants (1.17+/-0.07 ...

The influence of sex, body weight, and renal function on the xylose test.

A low excretion of xylose may be due to malabsorption, renal disease, or old age. Malabsorption can be distinguished from other causes by performing a combined oral and intravenous test, the result being expressed as a fraction of these readings. Sex and body weight do not influence the xylose test.

Influence of systemic infections on xylose absorption.

Serial blood-xylose concentrations have been determined in 28 Papua New Guineans after 25 g oral xylose; 9 had an acute and 8 a chronic systemic infection, 4 the tropical splenomegaly syndrome and 7 were free of infection. Mean xylose was significantly depressed at 30, 60, 90 and 120 min in those with acute and chronic infections. Correlations between xylose and serum albumin, alpha 1, alpha 2,...
