Fingering from Ionization Fronts in Plasmas

چکیده
In this paper we describe the formation of fingers from ionization fronts for a hydrodynamic plasma model. The fingers result from a balance between the destabilizing effect of impact ionization and the stabilizing effect of electron diffusion on ionization fronts. We show that electron diffusion acts as an effective surface tension on moving fronts and estimate analytically the size of the fingers and its dependence on both the electric field and electron diffusion coefficient. We also verify and extend our results by direct numerical simulation of the model and compute finger-like travelling waves analogous to structures such as Saffman-Taylor fingers and Ivantsov paraboloid in the context of Hele-Shaw and Stefan problems respectively.

Regularization of moving boundaries in a laplacian field by a mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary condition: exact results.
The dynamics of ionization fronts that generate a conducting body are in the simplest approximation equivalent to viscous fingering without regularization. Going beyond this approximation, we suggest that ionization fronts can be modeled by a mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary condition. We derive exact uniformly propagating solutions of this problem in 2D and construct a single partial different...

Plasmas with multiply charged ions are of great importance for many applications as, e.g., near-electrode phenomena in arcs, pulsed high-current dis charges, plasmas produced by wire explosions, shock fronts, high-intensity lasers and ion beams. Let us mention also that the development of X-ray lasers is closely connected with the behaviour of highly ionized plasmas of heavy elements. Most of ...
متن کاملConversion of electrostatic to electromagnetic waves by superluminous ionization fronts.
The conversion of static electric fields to electromagnetic radiation by the incidence of a superluminous ionization front on plasma is investigated. For extremely superluminous fronts, the radiation is close to the plasma frequency and is converted with efficiency of order unity. A proof-of-principle experiment was conducted using semiconductor plasma containing an alternately charged capacito...
متن کاملDensity fingering of an exothermic autocatalytic reaction.
Density fingering of exothermic autocatalytic fronts in vertically oriented porous media and Hele-Shaw cells is studied theoretically for chemical reactions where the solutal and thermal contribution to density changes have opposite signs. The competition between these two effects leads to thermal plumes for ascending fronts. The descending fronts behave strikingly differently as they can featu...
متن کاملFingering instabilities in propagating fronts of the CO oxidation reaction on Pt(100)
Introduction Interfacial patterning is a common feature of many non-linear systems ranging from isothermal chemical reactions [1] to viscous flow systems [2]. Underlying this behavior is the spatial decoupling of chemical species due to differences in convective or diffusive transport. The oxidation of CO on Pt(100) represents a non-linear system where adsorbed CO and O are significantly decoup...
