چکیده

A PbWO4 crystal produced for the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at the LHC was cut into three equal-length sections. The central one was irradiated with 290 MeV/c positive pions up to a fluence of (5.67± 0.46)× 10 cm, while the other two were exposed to a 24 GeV/c proton fluence of (1.17 ± 0.11) × 10 cm. The damage recovery in these crystals, stored in the dark at room temperature, has been followed over two years. The comparison of the radiation-induced changes in light transmission for these crystals shows that damage is proportional to the star densities produced by the irradiation. submitted to Elsevier for publication in Nucl. High-energy proton induced damage in PbWO4 calorimeter crystals

Eight production quality PbWO4 crystals of CMS have been irradiated in a 20 GeV/c proton beam up to fluences of 5.4×1013 cm. The damage recovery in these crystals has been followed for over a year. Comparative irradiations with Co photons have been performed on seven other crystals using a dose rate of 1 kGy/h. In proton irradiated crystals the light transmission band-edge shifts and the induce...

Study of the e/pi ratio for the shashlik detector via simulated proton collision events

The intention of this research project was to calculate the e/π ratio for the proposed Shashlik Detector for the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment by simulating proton collision events in a virtual detector. The e/π ratio is the ratio of the Shashlik’s ability to measure the energy of electromagnetic to hadronic particles. An upgrade is required for the electromagnetic calorimeter due to radiati...

First results on radiation damage in PbWO4 crystals exposed to a 20 GeV/c proton beam

We have exposed seven full length production quality crystals of the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) of the CMS detector to a 20 GeV/c proton beam at the CERN PS accelerator. The exposure was done at fluxes of 10 p/cm/h and 10 p/cm/h and integral fluences of 10 p/cm and 10 p/cm were reached at both rates. The light transmission of the crystals was measured after irradiation and suitable cool...

Principles of the cutting method proposed for the PbWO4 crystals of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter

A method for cutting the 110’000 PbWO4 crystals of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter is proposed. The machinery, the tooling and the sequence of operation are described. Processing parameters resulting from experimental runs are indicated. A mass production organisation is forecasted. CMS Note 1997/024 01 04 1997 M. Lebeau 2
