Relativistic Flows in TeV Blazars
نویسنده
چکیده
Rapid variability of the TeV emission in several blazars implies a central black hole mass MBH < 10M⊙, appreciably smaller than the values estimated from the MBH −Lbulg relation, and Doppler factors for the γ-ray emitting fluid much larger than those associated with radio patterns. We discuss the conditions in the central engine required to account for the short timescales and large luminosities observed, and propose some explanations for the inferred kinematics of the source on various scales.

Decelerating Flows in TeV Blazars
The peak of the de-absorbed energy distribution of the TeV emitting blazars, all of the BL Lacertae (BL) class, can reach values up to ∼ 10 TeV. In the context of synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) models of relativistic uniformly moving blobs of plasma, such high energy peak emission can be reproduced only by assuming Doppler factors of δ ∼ 50. However, such high values strongly disagree with the ...
متن کاملDecelerating Flows in TeV Blazars: A Resolution to the BL Lac – FR I Unification Problem
TeV emission from BL Lacertae (BL) objects is commonly modeled as Synchrotron-Self Compton (SSC) radiation from relativistically moving homogeneous plasma blobs. In the context of these models, the blob Lorentz factors needed to reproduce the corrected for absorption by the diffuse IR background (DIRB) TeV emission are large (δ & 50). The main reason for this is that stronger beaming eases the ...
متن کاملCorrelated Variability in Blazars
Blazars are thought to emit highly-collimated outflows, so-called jets. By their close alignment to our line of sight, relativistic beaming effects enable us to observe these jets over the whole electromagnetic spectrum up to TeV energies, making them ideal laboratories for studying jet physics. In the last years multiwavelength observations of blazars provided us with detailed data sets which ...
متن کاملA Hadronic Synchrotron Mirror Model for the “ orphan ” TeV flare in 1 ES 1959 + 650
Very-high-energy γ-ray flares of TeV blazars are generally accompanied by simultaneous flaring activity in X-rays. The recent observations by the Whipple collaboration of an “orphan” TeV flare of 1ES 1959+650 (without simultaneous X-ray flare) is very hard to reconcile with the standard leptonic SSC model which is routinely very successfully employed to explain the SED and spectral variability ...
متن کاملVERITAS Discovery of Variability in the VHE γ-Ray Emission of 1ES 1218+304
1ES 1218+304 is among a group of several TeV blazars that exhibit surprisingly hard energy spectra given their redshifts. The VERITAS collaboration has carried out an intensive observing campaign of 1ES 1218+304 in early 2009 to characterize the emission properties of one of these hard-spectra distant blazars in more detail. While hard-spectra TeV blazars are most promising for unveiling putati...
