Discussion: Conditional Growth Charts

چکیده

I will use the terms “reference centiles” or “centile charts,” as the setting that I consider here is more general than that of “growth charts.” Longitudinal reference centiles over some measure of time (typically age) are almost always implemented repeatedly on the same individual. In this kind of setting the notion of conditional or adaptive centile charts is very appealing, particularly when the within-individual variability is much less than that between individuals. While marginal or unconditional centile charts are common in many areas of application, conditional charts are still rarely encountered and further methodological development in this area is to be welcomed. The flexibility of the quantile regression approach of Wei and He (WH), for instance in allowing the dependence on past history to vary across centiles, is most attractive, as are the rigor and scope of their consideration of the problem. I do, nevertheless, want to make a few cautionary remarks. The first relates to regression quantiles in particular, the second concerns a constraint common to all existing methods of constructing conditional percentiles, and the third and final point addresses the use of centile charts for screening. To concretize the discussion, the following setting will be considered throughout: the measurement of interest is assumed to be diastolic blood pressure in pregnant women, monitored between weeks 16 and 36 of pregnancy. There is typically an initial dip in blood pressure over this period, followed by a rise toward the end of pregnancy.

Discussion : Conditional Growth Charts

1. Overview. Wei and He are to be congratulated on an innovative and important article. The conditional approach to growth charts described in their article is important in a practical sense, and the use of quantile regression is both natural and well motivated. We look forward to further application of their idea to actual practice, because the concept of “falling behind” in one’s growth cycle...

Discussion: Conditional Growth Charts

First, I would like to congratulate the authors for an interesting application of their semiparametric quantile regression model to longitudinal human growth data. On an earlier occasion, I had an opportunity to collaborate with the authors on applying this method for the purpose of constructing semilongitudinal growth charts for height and for body mass index. As my background is in medicine r...

Discussion: Conditional Growth Charts

The authors are to be congratulated for a very important contribution with many practical applications. Including covariates in the construction of growth charts will undoubtedly lead to more informative tools for practitioners in many disciplines. Growth charts are widely used in practice to monitor the evolution of particular univariate measurements over time. In some situations, a patient’s ...

Conditional Quantile Analysis When Covariates Are Functions, With Application to Growth Data

Motivated by the conditional growth charts problem, we develop a method for conditional quantile analysis when predictors take values in a functional space. The proposed method aims at estimating conditional distribution functions under a generalized functional regression framework. This approach facilitates balancing of model flexibility and the curse of dimensionality for the infinite-dimensi...

Conditional reference charts to assess weight gain in British infants.

Growth monitoring in infancy is a useful tool for detecting growth disorders and failure to thrive. However, current weight charts do not monitor growth as such, they only identify infants whose weight centile is low and/or falling. A reference of conditional weight gain is described which compares an infant's current weight with that predicted from their previous weight, allowing for the fact ...
