چکیده

We present a new method for estimating the corotation radius in tightly wound spiral galaxies, through analysis of the radial variation of the offset between arms traced by the potential (P-arms) and those traced by dust (D-arms). We have verified the predictions of semi-analytical theory through hydrodynamical simulations and have examined the uniqueness of the galactic parameters that can be deduced by this method. We find that if the range of angular offsets measured at different radii in a galaxy is greater than around π/4, it is possible to locate the radius of corotation to within ∼ 25%. We argue that the relative location of the Pand D-arms provides more robust constraints on the galactic parameters than can be inferred from regions of enhanced star formation (SF-arms), since interpretation of the latter involves uncertainties due to reddening and the assumed star formation law. We thus stress the importance of K-band studies of spiral galaxies.

Application of the global modal approach to spiral galaxies

We have tested the applicability of the global modal approach in the density wave theory of spiral structure for a sample of six spiral galaxies: NGC 488, NGC 628, NGC 1566, NGC 2985, NGC 3938 and NGC 6503. The galaxies demonstrate a variety of spiral patterns from the regular open and tightly wound spiral patterns to a multi-armed spiral structure. Using the observed radial distributions of th...

Formation and Fragmentation of Gaseous Spurs in Spiral Galaxies

Intermediate-scale spurs are common in spiral galaxies, but perhaps most distinctively evident in a recent image showing a quasi-regular series of dust lanes projecting from the arms of M51 (Scoville & Rector 2001). We investigate, using time-dependent numerical MHD simulations, how such spurs could form (and subsequently fragment) from the interaction of a gaseous interstellar medium with a st...

Radial transport of dust in spiral galaxies

Motivated by recent observations which detect dust at large galactocentric distances in the disks of spiral galaxies, we propose a mechanism of outward radial transport of dust by spiral stellar density waves. We consider spiral galaxies in which most of dust formation is localized inside the corotation radius. We show that in the disks of such spiral galaxies, the dust grains can travel over r...

Spiral stellar density waves and the flattening of abundance gradients in the warm gas component of spiral galaxies

Motivated by recent observations of plateaus and minima in the radial abundance distributions of heavy elements in the Milky Way and some other spiral galaxies, we propose a dynamical mechanism for the formation of such features around corotation. Our numerical simulations show that the non-axisymmetric gravitational field of spiral density waves generates cyclone and anticylone gas flows in th...

Nuclear Spirals as Signatures of Supermassive Black Holes

Recent high resolution images of spiral galaxies show wide varieties of features including nuclear spirals in the central parts. Some of the galaxies show grand-design nuclear spirals. The morphology of grand-design spirals can be further divided by the openness of the arms: tightly wound ones with winding angle of around 3π radian and open spirals with winding angle of around π radian. Based o...
