چکیده

This is a three-year project initiated in 2008 and scheduled for completion in 2011. During the project’s second year, research focused on three main areas. These were (1) the comparative efficiency of transportation services from liquid biofuels versus electricity from biomass, (2) remote sensing of biomass energy deployments and related land-use changes, and (3) modeling the climate consequences of changes in land-surface properties related to biomass energy crops. This was a very successful year for the project. Several papers were published, including papers in Science (Campbell et al. 2009), Nature (Loarie et al. 2009), and Geophysical Research Letters (Georgescu et al. 2009). One GCEP post-doc (Eve Hinckley) moved to a new postdoctoral position at the University of Colorado, and two PhD students (Rachael Garratt and Lena Perkins) started working intensively with the project.

Evaluation of Off-grid Hybrid Renewable Systems in the Four Climate Regions of Iran

Renewable systems influence the process of supplying domestic electricity demands. It will be useful to replace the conventional energy generation system by renewable energy sources since the uncontrolled use of fossil fuels is accompanied by global warming and environmental hazards, in addition to the danger of their depletion, and because most of the energy derived from these fuels are used i...

Biomass energy: the scale of the potential resource.

Increased production of biomass for energy has the potential to offset substantial use of fossil fuels, but it also has the potential to threaten conservation areas, pollute water resources and decrease food security. The net effect of biomass energy agriculture on climate could be either cooling or warming, depending on the crop, the technology for converting biomass into useable energy, and t...

Woody Biomass for Bioenergy and Biofuels in the United States—a Briefing

Executive Summary Forests are expected to have an important role in climate change mitigation under future climate change policy. Currently, much of the interest in forests centers on the opportunity to sequester carbon as part of a cap and trade policy. In addition to sequestering emitted carbon, forest resources reduce carbon emissions at the source when substituted for the fossil fuels curre...

Aquatic Biomass Resources and Carbon Dioxide Trapping

Intensively managed microalgal production facilities are capable of fixing several-fold more carbon dioxide per unit area than trees or crops. Although CO, is still released when fuels derived from algal biomass are burned, integration of microalgal farms for flue gas capture approximately doubles the amount of energy produced per unit of CO, released. Materials derived from microalgal biomass ...

Effects of Climate Change and LUCC on Terrestrial Biomass in the Lower Heihe River Basin during 2001–2010

Ecosystem services are tightly coupled with availability of solar energy and its partition into energy fluxes, and biomass accumulation, which represents the energy flux in ecosystems, is a key aspect of ecosystem services. This study analyzed the effects of climate change and land use and land cover change (LUCC) on the biomass accumulation change in the Lower Heihe River Basin during 2001–201...
