چکیده

1. Exposure of the dogfish to rapidly induced hypoxia caused an initial, large reduction in heart rate to 32 % of its initial normoxic value. When P o of inspired water (PIt Ot) reached its lowest level, heart rate increased to 65 % of its normoxic value and this rate was maintained until Px 0> was returned to normal. 2. Bilateral section of the branchial and pharyngeal branches of either cranial nerve IX or cranial nerve X had no significant effect on the cardiac response to rapidly induced hypoxia. Bilateral section of the pharyngeal and branchial branches of both of these cranial nerves abolished the initial large reduction in heart rate in response to rapidly induced hypoxia; heart rate fell steadily to 40 % of its initial normoxic value after 3 min. 3. Bilateral section of cranial nerves V and VII had a similar effect, with heart rate reaching 62 % of its normoxic value, 3 min after exposure to rapidly induced hypoxia. When the four cranial nerves were bilaterally sectioned together, there was no significant change in heart rate after 3 min exposure to rapidly induced hypoxia. 4. It is concluded that the oxygen receptors responsible for the bradycardia elicited in dogfish by environmental hypoxia are innervated by cranial nerves, V, VII, IX and X and that if receptors in the C.N.s. are involved in the response, their role is minimal.

On the Nervous Regulation of Gill Blood Flow in the Dogfish (scyliorhinus Canicula)

The motor innervation of the gill blood vessels of the dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula L. has been investigated by electrical stimulation of (1) the branchial branches of the IXth and Xth cranial nerves in isolated perfused 1st holobranch preparations and (2) both Xth cranial nerves in whole anaesthetized fish. The observed vascular responses to nerve stimulation appear to be entirely due to cont...

Changes in activity and ventilation in response to hypoxia in unrestrained, unoperated dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula L.).

daily activity cycles, together with changes in activity and ventilation frequency in response to hypoxia (PO2 about 8 kPa), have been measured in unrestrained, unoperated dogfish. Continuous recording of activity over 48 h reveals that dogfish are essentially nocturnal, being three to four times more active at night than during the day. In relatively inactive, diurnal dogfish, rapid reduction ...

Spontaneous efferent activity in branches of the vagus nerve controlling heart rate and ventilation in the dogfish.

Efferent activity was recorded from cranial nerves in the decerebrate dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) before and after injection of paralysing drugs. The recordings were made from the mandibular (Vth) and glossopharyngeal (IXth) nerves and the branchial (respiratory) and cardiac branches of the vagus (Xth) nerve. All the respiratory branches (Vth, IXth and Xth) and both cardiac branches fired r...

Anatomy and development of the sinoatrial valves in the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula).

BACKGROUND We describe the adult anatomy and the development of the cardiac sinoatrial valves in the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula). METHODS We use scanning electron microscopy, histological and histochemical techniques in 39 hearts from embryos and adult specimens. RESULTS The sinoatrial valvular set of the adult dogfish is composed of two transverse valves laterally attached to the sinoa...

The Lesser-spotted Dogfish (scyliorhinus Canicula): Parasites and Scavenger Habits

The occurrence of parasites in the digestive tract of the lesser-spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) caught in the north western Mediterranean was analysed and the results compared with infestation levels in samples of the same species caught in the Atlantic (off the south west coast of Ireland). The relationships between parasite levels and the scavenger habits of the lesser-spotted dogfis...
