چکیده

Background—It has been suggested that oxidant stress may play a role in the pathophysiology of heart failure. However, no definitive information is available because most previous approaches used to measure oxidant stress are nonspecific, inaccurate, and unreliable. Methods and Results—To evaluate oxidant stress in the heart, we measured pericardial fluid levels of 8-iso-prostaglandin F2a (8-iso-PGF2a), a specific and quantitative marker of oxidant stress in vivo, in a series of 51 consecutive patients with ischemic and/or valvular heart disease referred for cardiac surgery. Pericardial levels of 8-iso-PGF2a were correlated with the functional severity of heart failure (NYHA classification) and with echocardiographic indices of ventricular dilatation measured by independent physicians. Pericardial levels of 8-iso-PGF2a were significantly increased in patients with symptomatic heart failure compared with asymptomatic patients and gradually increased with the functional severity of heart failure (f=.0003). In addition, pericardial levels of 8-iso-PGF2a were significantly correlated with left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic diameters (P=.008 and .026, respectively). Conclusions—Pericardial levels of 8-iso-PGF2a increase with the functional severity of heart failure and are associated with ventricular dilatation. These data suggest an important role for in vivo oxidant stress on ventricular remodeling and the progression to heart failure. (Circulation. 1998;97:1536-1539.)

Correlation of oxidative stress with activity of matrix metalloproteinase in patients with coronary artery disease. Possible role for left ventricular remodelling.

AIMS Oxidative stress is implicated in the progression of heart failure, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity is increased in patients with congestive heart failure. We examined the role of oxidative stress on MMP activity in humans. METHODS AND RESULTS We measured the MMP activity and the level of 8-iso-prostagandin F2alpha (8-iso-PGF2alpha), a specific and quantitative maker of oxida...

The effects of curcumin on the prevention of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias and heart failure in patients with unstable angina: A randomized clinical trial

Objective: Inflammation along with oxidative stress has an important role in the pathophysiology of unstable angina which leads to acute myocardial infarction, arrhythmias and eventually heart failure. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects and thereby, it may reduce cardiovascular complications. This randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the effects of curcumin on t...

بررسی فراوانی نشانگر CTnI و عوامل مرتبط با آن در بیماران با دیاستولیک دیس‌فانکشن AHF (PEF)

Abstract Background: Diastolic heart failure comprises 50 percent of cases of heart failure. The implications of increased levels of cardiac troponin I (CTnI) on congestive heart failure with preserved systolic function (AHF PEF) have been poorly evaluated. We hypothesized that its level might be elevated in AHF PEF so this evaluation was done in patients referred to Taleghani hospital with ...

Background and Objective: Psychosocial stresses are one of the causes of most clinical problemes of general health of societies. It can produce and intensify many diseases such as cardiovascular disorders. Studeise have shown this type of stress could produce free radicales and lead to oxidative stress. As regular exercise is effective in decreasing mortality from cardiovasulare dieases, immobi...

Carvedilol: A Promising Drug Combined with Lipid-lowering Medications for Patients with Hypertension and Heart Failure

Background: Statins frequently cause myopathy especially in combination with fibrates, and physical activity is considered a trigger for the muscle disorder. Elevated plasma levels of creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and aldolase, are the main indicators of the severity of myopathy. Carvedilol is commonly used with lipid-lowering drugs in the management of heart failure, hypert...
