ALMA Memo No. 496.1 183 GHz water vapour radiometers for ALMA: Estimation of phase errors under varying atmospheric conditions
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate the use of water vapour radiometers as a tool for estimating phase due to atmospheric water, focusing on the impact of differing atmospheric conditions on the relationship between path length and brightness temperature. We provide a formula for converting between the two for a variety of atmospheric conditions, and outline how the radiometer channel temperatures may be combined to give an optimal estimate for the path difference. This estimate gives an error of about 2% per mm of precipitable water vapour due to atmospheric variations. The presence of hydrometeors such as ice or water droplets is also considered, and we show that radiometers possessing sideband separation could be used to detect the presence of 0.02 mm of column integrated ice for crystals of size 75μm, and about 10 mm of water droplets.

متن کاملALMA Memo 352 - Design and Development of 183GHz Water Vapour Radiometers
This memo describes the plans for the development of the prototype 183 GHz radiometers for ALMA. It is planned that such radiometers will be used to correct for the phase errors introduced by water vapour in the atmosphere. One radiometer will be mounted on each of the antennas and will provide real-time measurements of the brightness temperature of the atmosphere at frequencies near the 183 GH...
متن کاملALMA Memo #303 Water Vapour Radiometers for ALMA
The JCMT-CSO single-baseline interferometer was the first to demonstrate phase correction using the 183 GHz line, using equipment built by Martina Wiedner, Richard Hills and colleagues. Only a limited quantity of data were gathered but the results (ALMA memo 252) were encouraging and suggested that even an uncooled system could provide effective phase calibration at submillimetre wavelengths. S...
متن کاملDesign and Implementation of the wvrgcal Program
This memo describes the software engineering and technical details of the design and implementation of the wvrgcal program and associated libraries. This program performs off-line correction of atmospheric phase fluctuations in ALMA observations, using the 183 GHz Water Vapour Radiometers (WVRs) installed on the ALMA 12 m dishes. The memo can be used as a guide for detailed study of the source ...
متن کاملALMA Memo #588 Inference of Coefficients for Use in Phase Correction II: Using the Observed Correlation Between Phase and Sky Brightness Fluctuations
By observing bright and compact astronomical sources while also taking data with the 183 GHz Water Vapour Radiometers, ALMA will be able to measure the ‘empirical’ relationship between fluctuations in the phase of the astronomical signal and the fluctuations of sky brightness around 183 GHz. Simulations of such measurements assuming only thermal noise in the astronomical and WVR receivers are p...
