چکیده

We have studied the X-ray dust scattering halos around 17 bright X-ray point sources using Chandra data. All sources were observed with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer and High-Energy Transmission Grating in Continuous Clocking Mode (CC-mode) or Timed Exposure Mode (TE-mode). We use an iterative method to resolve the halos at small scattering angles from the zeroth order data in CC-mode or the first order data in TE-mode which is not or less piled-up. Using the interstellar grain models of Weingartner & Draine (2001, WD01) and Mathis, Rumpl & Nordsieck (1977, MRN ) to fit the halo profiles, we get the hydrogen column densities and the spatial distributions of the scattering dust grains along the line of sights (LOS) to these sources. We find that the scattering dust density very close to these sources is much higher than the normal interstellar medium. For X-ray pulsars GX 301-2 and Vela X-1 with companions of strong stellar winds, the X-ray absorption column densities are much higher than the derived scattering column densities, because of the

Scattering by Interstellar Dust Grains . II . X - Rays

Scattering and absorption of X-rays by interstellar dust is calculated for a model consisting of carbonaceous grains and amorphous silicate grains. The calculations employ realistic dielectric functions with structure near X-ray absorption edges, with resulting features in absorption, scattering, and extinction. Differential scattering cross sections are calculated for energies between 0.3 and ...

A viable interstellar dust model characterized by the composition, morphology, and size distribution of the dust grains and by the abundance of the different elements locked up in the dust should fit all observational constraints arising primarily from the interactions of the dust with incident radiation or the ambient gas. In spite of the many different manifestations of these interactions, we...

Soft X-ray Scattering and Halos from Dust

Small angle scatterings of X-rays by interstellar dust particles create halos around x-ray sources. The halo intensity and its projected radial distribution around a source can provide important information on the spatial distribution of the dust along the line of sight to the source, and on the physical properties of the scattering dust particles. Halos around x-ray point sources have been use...

Optical , UV , and X - Ray Scattering by Interstellar Dust Grains

Scattering and absorption properties at optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray wavelengths are calculated for an interstellar dust model consisting of carbonaceous grains and amorphous silicate grains. The widely-used Henyey-Greenstein phase function provides a good approximation for the scattering phase function at wavelengths between ∼0.4 and 1µm, but fails to fit the calculated phase functions at s...
