Does Quantitative Easing Affect Market Liquidity?

چکیده
The second round of large-scale asset purchases by the Federal Reserve—frequently referred to as QE2—included repeated purchases of Treasury inflation-protected securities (TIPS). To quantify the effect QE2 had on the functioning of the TIPS market and the related market for inflation swaps, we exploit the measure of combined liquidity premiums in TIPS yields and inflation swap rates derived by Christensen and Gillan (2012). We find that, on TIPS purchase dates, the liquidity premium dropped by 8 to 11 basis points depending on maturity, or about 50 percent. Furthermore, the effect was sustained on nonpurchase dates during most of the program, but dissipated towards its end. JEL Classification: E43, E52, E58, G12.

متن کاملFixed investment, liquidity constraint, and monetary policy: Evidence from Japanese manufacturing firm panel data
We empirically analyze the effects of monetary policy shocks on real fixed investment using panel data on Japanese manufacturing firms to examine the existence of a balance sheet channel. We find that contractionary monetary policy statistically significantly increases the firms’ liquidity constraint. Especially, the smaller the firm size, the greater the effects of contractionary monetary poli...

Any textbook of macroeconomics will tell you that the starting point of the transmission mechanism of monetary policy is a change in reserves and an associated change in short-term interest rates. Reserves can only be provided by a central bank. Therefore, when a central bank increases its provision of reserves, it is certain that short-term interest rates will decline. Changes in short-term in...
