Reversal-free Ca iiH profiles: a challenge for solar chromosphere modeling in quiet inter-network

چکیده

Aims. We study chromospheric emission to understand the temperature stratification in the solar chromosphere. Methods. We observed the intensity profile of the Ca iiH line in a quiet Sun region close to the disk center at the German Vacuum Tower Telescope. We analyze over 10 line profiles from internetwork regions. For comparison with the observed profiles, we synthesize spectra for a variety of model atmospheres with a non local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) radiative transfer code. Results. A fraction of about 25% of the observed Ca iiH line profiles do not show a measurable emission peak in H2v and H2r wavelength bands (reversal-free). All of the chosen model atmospheres with a temperature rise fail to reproduce such profiles. On the other hand, the synthetic calcium profile of a model atmosphere that has a monotonic decline of the temperature with height shows a reversal-free profile that has much lower intensities than any observed line profile. Conclusions. The observed reversal-free profiles indicate the existence of cool patches in the interior of chromospheric network cells, at least for short time intervals. Our finding is not only in conflict with a full-time hot chromosphere, but also with a very cool chromosphere as found in some dynamic simulations.

The solar chromosphere at high resolution with IBIS II. Acoustic shocks in the quiet internetwork and the role of magnetic fields

Context. The exact nature of the quiet solar chromosphere, and especially its temporal variations, are still subject of intense debate. One of the contentious issues is the possible role of magnetic field in structuring the quieter solar regions. Aims. We characterize the dynamics of the quiet inter-network chromosphere by studying the occurrence of acoustic shocks and their relation with the c...

DOT Tomography of the Solar Atmosphere VII. Chromospheric Response to Acoustic Events

We use synchronous movies from the Dutch Open Telescope sampling the G band, Ca iiH, and Hα with five-wavelength profile sampling to study the response of the chromosphere to acoustic events in the underlying photosphere. We first compare the visibility of the chromosphere in Ca iiH and Hα, demonstrate that studying the chromosphere requires Hα data, and summarize recent developments in underst...

SUMER Observations Confirm the Dynamic Nature of the Quiet Solar Outer Atmosphere: The Inter-network Chromosphere

On 12 March 1996, during the commissioning phase of the SOHO mission, we obtained observations of the quiet Sun with the SUMER instrument. The observations were sequences of 15-20 second exposures of ultraviolet emission line profiles and of the neighboring continua. These data contain signatures of the dynamics of the solar chromosphere that are uniquely useful because of wavelength coverage, ...

Solar atmospheric oscillations and the chromospheric magnetic topology

Aims. We investigate the oscillatory properties of the quiet solar chromosphere in relation to the underlying photosphere, with particular regard to the effects of the magnetic topology. Methods. For the first time we perform a Fourier analysis on a sequence of line-of-sight velocities measured simultaneously in a photospheric (Fe I 709.0 nm) and a chromospheric line (Ca II 854.2 nm). The veloc...

On the Nature of the Solar Chromosphere

DOT high-resolution imagery suggests that only internetworkspanning Hα “mottles” constitute the quiet-sun chromosphere, whereas more upright network “straws” in “hedge rows” reflect transition-region conditions.
