A Quasi-Periodic Modulation of the Radio Light Curve of the Blazar PKSB0048−097

چکیده
In this letter we present the results of a wavelet analysis of the radio light curve of the BLLac Object PKSB0048−097 from the University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory monitoring program at 8GHz during twenty-five years, from 1979 to 2004. The results show a remarkable periodicity of 450–470 days in the early 1980s that changed to a ∼585 day periodicity in the late 1980s to early 1990s. A less pronounced ∼400 day periodicity is found after ∼ 1995. Very-long-baseline interferometry imaging at 15GHz shows dramatic structural changes in the usually unresolved source between two epochs, 1995.57 and 2002.38. The pronounced northward directed jet seen in the 2002 image differs by more than 90◦ in direction from the source structure found in earlier epochs. These findings make PKSB0048−097 a primary target for multi-wavelength observations and intensive radio monitoring to decipher the blazar-variability phenomenon.

Nearly simultaneous multiband monitoring of blazars is very limited and most studies reported in literature are conflicting, too. Although optical variability on intra-night timescales is now a well established phenomenon for blazars, its relationship to long-term variability remains unclear. Possible clues could come from monitoring the optical spectrum for correlation with brightness. The pr...

Ultra-short pulse is a promising technology for achieving ultra-high data rate transmission which is required to follow the increased demand of data transport over an optical communication system. Therefore, the propagation of such type of pulses and the effects that it may suffer during its transmission through an optical waveguide has received a great deal of attention in the recent years. We...

We present results of a periodicity search of 20 intra-day variable optical light curves of the blazar S5 0716+714, selected from a database of 102 light curves spanning over three years. We use a wavelet analysis technique along with a randomization test and find strong candidates for nearly periodic variations in eight light curves, with probabilities ranging from 95% to >99%. This is the fir...
متن کاملDiscovery of long - term superorbital periodicities in the pseudo - transient
Long-term monitoring of the recently discovered X-ray transient, IGR J17098-3628, by the All Sky Monitor on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, has shown that it displays a long term (≈ 163d) quasi-periodic modulation in the data spanning its " active " state (i.e. approximately MJD 53450-54200). Furthermore, this light-curve is not typical of " classical " soft X-ray transients, in that J17...
متن کاملHelical jets in blazars Interpretation of the multifrequency long - term variability of AO 0235 + 16
The long-term variability of the multiwavelength blazar emission can be interpreted in terms of orientation variations of a helical, inhomogeneous, non-thermally emitting jet, possibly caused by the orbital motion of the parent black hole in a binary system (Villata & Raiteri 1999). The helical-jet model is here applied to explain the quasi-periodic radio-optical light curves and the broad-band...
