Pervasive Computing in the Supermarket: Designing a Context-Aware Shopping Trolley
نویسندگان
چکیده
Shopping in the real world is becoming an increasingly interactive experience as stores integrate various technologies to support shoppers. Based on an empirical study of supermarket shoppers, the authors designed a mobile context-aware system called the Context-Aware Shopping Trolley (CAST). The purpose of CAST is to support shopping in supermarkets through context-awareness and acquiring user attention, thus, the authors’ interactive trolley guides and directs shoppers in the handling and finding of groceries. An empirical evaluation showed that shoppers using CAST behaved differently than shoppers using a traditional trolley. Specifically, shoppers using CAST exhibited a more uniform pattern of product collection and found products more easily while travelling a shorter distance. As such, the study finds that CAST supported the supermarket shopping activity. DOI: 10.4018/978-1-4666-0194-9.ch010

A semantic-aware role-based access control model for pervasive computing environments
Access control in open and dynamic Pervasive Computing Environments (PCEs) is a very complex mechanism and encompasses various new requirements. In fact, in such environments, context information should be used in access control decision process; however, it is not applicable to gather all context information completely and accurately all the time. Thus, a suitable access control model for PCEs...
متن کاملA context-sensitive dynamic role-based access control model for pervasive computing environments
Resources and services are accessible in pervasive computing environments from anywhere and at any time. Also, due to ever-changing nature of such environments, the identity of users is unknown. However, users must be able to access the required resources based on their contexts. These and other similar complexities necessitate dynamic and context-aware access control models for such environmen...
متن کاملCAMAC: a context-aware mandatory access control model
Mandatory access control models have traditionally been employed as a robust security mechanism in multilevel security environments such as military domains. In traditional mandatory models, the security classes associated with entities are context-insensitive. However, context-sensitivity of security classes and flexibility of access control mechanisms may be required especially in pervasive c...
متن کاملHow to Nudge In Situ: Designing Lambent Devices to Deliver Information Salience in Supermarkets
There are available a number of mobile shopping aids and recommender systems, but none of which can be easily used for a weekly shop at a local supermarket. We present a minimalistic, mobile and fully functional lambent display that clips onto any shopping trolley, intended to nudge people when choosing what to buy. It provided salient information about the food-miles for various food items rep...
متن کاملNudging the Trolley in the Supermarket: How to Deliver the Right Information to Shoppers
The amount of information available to help decide what foods to buy and eat is increasing rapidly with the advent of concerns about, and data on, health impacts, environmental effects, and economic consequences. This glut of information can be overwhelming when presented within the context of a high time-pressure, low involvement activity such as supermarket shopping. How can we nudge people’s...
