Rigorous Entropy - Energy Arguments

چکیده
One of the most appealing heuristic devices for unders tanding when a phase transition will take place is to consider the balance of energy versus entropy. Probably the simplest example is the well-known (9'27) heuristic a rgument for the absence of phase transitions in one-dimensional systems with short-range forces: Suppose that there were two distinct phases with the same bulk free energy. Then, starting with a single phase, we can insert a droplet of size L of the other phase: the energy cost is finite ( independent of L), since the forces are short range; while the droplet can be inserted in approximately N / L places (where N is the length of the system), leading to an entropy gain on the order of k l n ( N / L ) . Thus, for any temperature T > 0, the free energy change c o n s t k T I n ( N / L ) is negative for sufficiently large N; that is, the putative pure phase is unstable.

Non-equilibrium pattern selection in particle sedimentation
In this paper, we explain some well known experimental observations in fluid solid interaction from a thermodynamic perspective. In particular we use the extremum of the rate of entropy production to establish the stability of specific patterns observed in single and multiparticle sedimentation in an infinite fluid and the sedimentation of spheres in the presence of walls. While these phenomena...
متن کاملEntropy and Energy, - a Universal Competition
When a body approaches equilibrium, energy tends to a minimum and entropy tends to a maximum. Often, or usually, the two tendencies favour different configurations of the body. Thus energy is deterministic in the sense that it favours fixed positions for the atoms, while entropy randomizes the positions. Both may exert considerable forces in the attempt to reach their objectives. Therefore they...

A link of information entropy and kinetic energy for quantum many-body systems. Abstract A direct connection of information entropy S and kinetic energy T is obtained for nuclei and atomic clusters, which establishes T as a measure of the information in a distribution. It is conjectured that this is a universal property for fermionic many-body systems. We also check rigorous inequalities previo...
متن کاملEntropy, Closures and Subgrid Modeling
Maximum entropy states or statistical mechanical equilibrium solutions have played an important role in the development of a fundamental understanding of turbulence and its role in geophysical flows. In modern general circulation models of the earth’s atmosphere and oceans most parameterizations of the subgrid-scale energy and enstrophy transfers are based on ad hoc methods or ideas developed f...
متن کاملThe thermodynamic limit and black hole entropy in the area ensemble
We discuss the thermodynamic limit in the canonical area ensemble used in loop quantum gravity to model quantum black holes. The computation of the thermodynamic limit is the rigorous way to obtain a smooth entropy from the counting entropy given by a direct determination of the number of microstates compatible with macroscopic quantities (the energy in standard statistical mechanics or the are...
