Male three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus make antibiotic nests: a novel form of parental protection?

چکیده
The egg nest of male three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus is constructed with a gluelike secretion that this study demonstrates has antimicrobial properties. Glue collected from reproductively active males decreased the growth rate of bacteria and opportunistic fungi, and eggs were more likely to mature and hatch after exposure to their father’s glue. This phenomenon may represent a direct physiological contribution from a male towards protecting his offspring from pathogens, and if so is a novel form of parental protection. # 2008 The Authors

Parental fanning behavior and prolactin cell activity in the male three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus L.
During the period that sexually mature male three-spined sticklebacks display parental fanning behavior, the rate of synthesis and release of the prolactin cells in the hypophysis, as estimated with quantitative electron microscopy, is enhanced considerably. This finding points to involvement of endogenous prolactin in the regulation of parental fanning behavior in this species.
متن کاملCain and Abel reloaded? Kin recognition and male-male aggression in three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus L.
The influence of relatedness on male-male aggression was tested in three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus. The intensity of aggression against brothers and non-kin males did not differ significantly, indicating that kin recognition plays at most a minor role in aggressive interactions between male G. aculeatus.
متن کاملIdentification of Major and Minor QTL for Ecologically Important Morphological Traits in Three-Spined Sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus)
Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping studies of Pacific three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) have uncovered several genomic regions controlling variability in different morphological traits, but QTL studies of Atlantic sticklebacks are lacking. We mapped QTL for 40 morphological traits, including body size, body shape, and body armor, in a F2 full-sib cross between northern Euro...
متن کاملLatitudinal variation in photoperiodic response of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus in western North America.
Reproductive maturation in both male and female three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus was strongly photoperiodic in a northern population (Alaska, 61 degrees N) but not in a southern population (Oregon, 43 degrees N) from western North America. Increasing reliance on photoperiod with increasing latitude is a general phenomenon among vertebrates, and is probably due to the anticipation...
متن کاملGeography of the circadian gene clock and photoperiodic response in western North American populations of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus.
Controlled laboratory experiments were used to show that Oregon and Alaskan three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, collected from locations differing by 18° of latitude, exhibited no significant variation in length of the polyglutamine domain of the clock protein or in photoperiodic response within or between latitudes despite the fact that male and female G. aculeatus are photoperiod...
