Design tradeoffs for a high spectral resolution mid-infrared echelle spectrograph on the Thirty-Meter Telescope

چکیده
A feasibility design study was undertaken to assess the requirements of a mid-infrared echelle spectrograph (MIRES) with a resolving power of 120,000 and its associated mid-infrared adaptive optics (MIRAO) system on the Thirty-Meter Telescope. Our baseline design incorporates a 2Kx2K Si:As array or array mosaic for the spectrograph and a 1Kx1K Si:As array for the slit viewer. Various tradeoffs were studied to minimize risk and to optimize the sensitivity of the instrument. Major challenges are to integrate the spectrograph to the MIRAO system and, later, to an adaptive secondary, the procurement of a suitable window and large KRS-5 lenses, and the acquisition of large format mid-IR detector arrays suitable for the range of background conditions. We conclude that the overall risk is relatively low and there is no technical reason that should prevent this instrument from being ready for use at first light on the ThirtyMeter Telescope.

We discuss the design and performance of TEXES, the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph. TEXES is a mid-infrared (5-25 µm) spectrograph with several operating modes: high-resolution, cross-dispersed with a resolving power of R = λ/δλ ≈ 100,000, 0.5% spectral coverage, and a ∼ 1.5 × 8 ′′ slit; medium-resolution long-slit, with R ≈ 15,000, 0.5% coverage, and a ∼ 1.5×45 ′′ slit; low-resolutio...

IRIS (InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph) is a first light instrument presently being developed for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). IRIS will include an integral field spectrograph and an imaging camera, covering wavelengths from 0.84 μm to 2.4 μm (infrared range). IRIS will work with the Narrow-Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System (NFIRAOS), achieving an unprecedented angular resolution [1], cre...
متن کاملObservations of H α , iron , and oxygen lines in B , Be , and shell stars
Observations of B, Be, and shell stars in different spectral regions are important for putting constraints on modeling these stars. Echelle spectrographs as well as the high sensitivity of modern detectors in the red part of the spectrum provide a wealth of the information contained in the whole visible and near infrared regions obtained simultaneously. The aim of this paper is a spectroscopic ...
متن کاملExtragalactic Spectroscopy with SIRTF/IRS
The Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) is one of the three instruments on board the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) to be launched in December 2001. The IRS will provide high resolution spectra (R≈600) from 10–37 μm and low resolution spectra (R≥60) from 5–40 μm. Its high sensitivity and “spectral mapping”-mode make it a powerful instrument for observing both faint point-like and extended so...
