چکیده

This paper explores the problem of signalling efficiency of the Session Initiation Protocol in a cellular network. We present performance metrics on SIP and compare SIP signalling efficiency with ISDN Q.931. We present recent measurement results on SIP and SigComp performance and conclude that optimisation of SIP beyond SigComp is necessary for cellular access. We suggest an optimisation process starting in the ASCII domain and proceeding to a Type-Length-Value representation for SIP. The process combines protocol simplifications and encoding. As an alternative, we present an estimation of the efficiency of using zipping for compressing SIP/SDP messages. The paper estimates the signalling efficiency of the different optimisation steps in the ASCII and the binary domains in a narrow band context demonstrating at best a compression ratio of better than 10 to 1 compared to SIP as specified for 3G release 5 using the TLV coding style. Additionally, we estimate that the same level of compression may be reachable with a zipping approach we outline. Finally, we present a new architecture for SIP and SDP adding a new Type-Length-Value representation and the other optimisations for the protocol for narrow band access such as cellular networks.

Covert Channels in SIP for VoIP signalling

In this paper, we evaluate available steganographic techniques for SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) that can be used for creating covert channels during signaling phase of VoIP (Voice over IP) call. Apart from characterizing existing steganographic methods we provide new insights by introducing new techniques. We also estimate amount of data that can be transferred in signalling messages for t...

Application-Layer QoS Interdomain Signalling with SIP Protocol

The QoS signalling across multiple domains is an open issue: in this paper we propose a QoS interdomain signalling solution for SIP-based multimedia sessions. Our solution refers to a signalling architecture proposed by ETSI in which the interdomain QoS signalling flows on the application layer along with the session signalling. In our solution we extend the precondition set attributes defined ...

MINIMUM PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES FOR NARROW-BAND DIGITAL CHANNELS USING GEOSTATIONARY SATELLITES TO SERVE TRANSPORTABLE AND VEHICULAR MOBILE EARTH STATIONS IN THE 1-3 GHz RANGE, NOT FORMING PART OF THE ISDN

considering a) that performance objectives for digital mobile-satellite channels using narrow-band modulation and geostationary satellites should include an allowance for interference levels among and within systems operating in the 1-3 GHz range, as well as comply with user requirements for performance; b) that “general purpose” digital mobile-satellite channels may be used by land, maritime a...

A Simple Model for Calculating SIP Signalling Flows in 3GPP IP Multimedia Subsystems

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) uses the IETF Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as a signalling protocol in the IP Multimedia Subsystem for 3rd generation UMTS networks. Signalling Messages sent using the SIP protocol pass through intermediate SIP nodes in such a way that the message size grows as a result of additional data being added to the message. Modelling of network flows i...
