چکیده

A growing body of evidence has demonstrated significant and sustained improvement in glycemic control in type 2 diabetes after bariatric surgery. However, there are limited data on the impact of bariatric surgery in type 1 diabetes (T1D). Only fewer than 10 cases of bariatric surgery in patients with T1D have been reported in the literature, which show a significant weight reduction and improvement in glycemic control (1–3). A recent experimental study in a rat model of spontaneous development of T1D has also shown that a particular type of gastrointestinal bypass (duodenaljejunal bypass surgery) lowers blood glucose concentration within 2 days after surgery (4). The aim of this study was to assess the metabolic outcomes, including the glycemic status, of patients with T1D after bariatric surgery.

Metabolic Effects of Bariatric Surgery

Obesity and its associated comorbidities are an ongoing health care problem worldwide [1]. It is well known that obese patients are at increased risk for the development of diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and other degenerative diseases [2]. Bariatric surgery has demonstrated to achieve, on top of significant weight reduction, also long-term control of metab...

Long-term results of gastric bypass surgery in morbidly obese type 1 diabetes patients.

BACKGROUND Long-term effects of bariatric surgery in morbidly obese type 1 patients are unknown. Five to eight-year experience in the case series of type 1 diabetes subjects is presented. METHODS Three poorly controlled type 1 diabetes patients, aged 19, 23, and 28 underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. RESULTS Their maximum body weight reduction noted during the follow-up was between ...

Improved Carbohydrate Metabolism After Bariatric Surgery Raises Antioxidized LDL Antibody Levels in Morbidly Obese Patients

OBJECTIVE Antioxidized LDL (anti-oxLDL) antibodies have recently been suggested to be protective against the development of diabetes. We measured the changes in anti-oxLDL antibody levels in the inverse situation of improvement in carbohydrate metabolism. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The study was undertaken in 73 morbidly obese individuals, 21 of whom had type 2 diabetes, before and 7 months ...

Quantification of epicardial adipose tissue in morbidly obese patients before and after bariatric surgery

Background Epicardial adipose tissue is a highly complex endocrine organ that generates various molecules with profound local and systemic effects that can play a role in obesityrelated heart damage. Bariatric surgery is a last-step therapeutic option to ameliorate obesity. Objective: To compare the amount of epicardial adipose tissue, as well as anatomic and functional features of the heart, a...

Liver markers, prevalence of the metabolic syndrome abnormalities and effect of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in morbidly obese subjects.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the relations between liver markers (GGT, ALT and AST) and the metabolic syndrome (and its components) in morbidly obese subjects, and to determine the response of these metabolic factors and hepatic enzymes after weight loss induced by Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. METHODS This study was carried out at a university hospital, in Santo André (SP), Brazil. We evaluated 140 mo...
