The role of electronic friction of low-energy recoils in atomic collision cascades

چکیده
We investigate the influence of low-energy recoils with respect to the electronic excitation of solids generated in atomic collision cascades. It is found that the electronic friction experienced by recoil atoms moving with kinetic energies below 10 eV contributes substantially to the total excitation energy dissipated into electronic degrees of freedom. The collision dynamics, on the other hand, remain virtually unchanged if the friction loss of these particles is switched on or off. This is illustrated by looking at the yield, emission sites and energies of sputtered surface atoms.

A new directional model for the electronic frictional forces in molecular dynamics simulations of radiation damage in metals
The damage caused by collision cascades in irradiated materials forms the initial conditions for longer term microstructural evolution. The exchange of energy between electrons and ions during cascades can significantly affect this damage. Models for incorporating this exchange within classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations exist, but most approximate the ion-electron energy transfer via ...
متن کاملClassical Dynamics Description of Low Energy Cascades in Solids: Atomic Ejection from Amorphous Argon
A classical dynamics calculation of atomic ejection due to a 1 eV kinetic energy impulse to a single atom is made for an amorphous argon solid. Impulses of this magnitude occur following electronic stimulation of the solid. The calculations show that the energized atom produces a collision sequence that results in a recoil spectrum similar to that predicted for binary collisions and to those ca...

One of the methods of direct detection of the massive component of dark matter is the registration of self-recoils in semiconductor detectors at cryogenic temperatures after the WIMPs scattering. In this contribution, after a short presentation of Lindhard curves, derived from the integro-differential equations of the general theory, we discuss the discrepancies between experimental data and th...

The role of low-pressure RF plasma in the inactivation of Escherichia coli O157, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Enterobacter sakazakii using N2-O2 and SF6 gases was assessed. 1×109 colony-forming units (CFUs) of each bacterial isolate were placed on three polymer foils. The effects of pressure, power, distance from the source, and exposure time to plasma gases were optimized. The...
متن کاملExperimental and Monte Carlo studies on the response of CR-39 detectors to Am-Be neutron spectrum
Background: The Poly-Allyl Diglycol Carbonate (PADC) detector is of particular interest for development of a fast neutron dosimeter. Fast neutrons interact with the constituents of the CR-39 detector and produce H, C and O recoils, as well as (n, α) reaction. These neutron- induced charged particles contribute towards the response of CR-39 detectors. Material and Methods: Electrochemical...
