Estimation of Tropical Forest Height and Aboveground Biomass from Dual-band InSAR measurements in Peruvian Amazon

چکیده
In July 2009, Earthdata Inc. acquired Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data over a lager part of the Peruvian lowland Amazon and mountain forests (more than 5000 km 2 ). The project was designed to provide high spatial resolution imagery to the science community to estimate and map forest aboveground biomass and to assess the capability of the measurements for REDD baseline applications. GeoSAR collects X-Band (VV, 9.7GHz), and P-Band, (HH, 0.35GHZ) interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in single-passes, over swaths of width ~11km, that may extend to several hundred kilometres, and from which are derived digital elevation models (DEMs) [1]. In this study, we develop a fusion approach by combining the dual-band InSAR phase and coherence with backscatter power at P-band HH and HV polarizations to estimate forest vertical structure (height) and aboveground biomass. The results are verified using forest structure and estimated biomass over a suite of field inventory plots distributed across landscapes over the study area. The estimation errors and spatial uncertainties in forest biomass are examined to provide realistic guidelines for REDD baseline carbon stock assessments. 2. Methodology

Estimation of Aboveground Biomass Using Manual Stereo Viewing of Digital Aerial Photographs in Tropical Seasonal Forest
The objectives of this study are to: (1) evaluate accuracy of tree height measurements of manual stereo viewing on a computer display using digital aerial photographs compared with airborne LiDAR height measurements; and (2) develop an empirical model to estimate stand-level aboveground biomass with variables derived from manual stereo viewing on the computer display in a Cambodian tropical sea...

Several attempts have been made to obtain forest stand parameters such as stand volume, stand density, basal area, biomass and carbon (C) stocks from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. However the relationship between these parameters and radar backscatter has been a challengin...

A new approach to tropical forest biomass monitoring with airborne interferometric X and P-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is presented. Forest height, basal area, and aboveground biomass are modeled from remote sensing data for a study site in the Brazilian Amazon. Radar data quality has improved: A novel digital model of vegetation height from Xand P-band interferometry is available ...
متن کاملEstimation of Forest Biomass from an Airborne Single-pass L-band Pol-insar System
In this paper we describe forest height and biomass results obtained with an experimental airborne L-Band fully polarimetric, singlepass InSAR system over a test area in western Canada. The significance of the single-pass characteristic is that temporal decorrelation is avoided, allowing more robust Pol-InSAR forest parameter recovery. The derived tree height results were validated against thos...
متن کاملAllometric Models for Tree Volume and Total Aboveground Biomass in a Tropical Humid Forest in Costa Rica1
Allometric equations for the estimation of tree volume and aboveground biomass in a tropical humid forest were developed based on direct measurements of 19 individuals of seven tree species in Northern Costa Rica. The volume and the biomass of the stems represented about two-thirds of the total volume and total aboveground biomass, respectively. The average stem volume varied between 4 and 11 M...
