چکیده

Primary pneumonic plague lias been known to occur in cold climates such as that of Eastern Siberia and Manchuria, but fortunately it is known to occur comparatively rarely in India. In India cases are reported to have occurred mostly in northern parts of India, especially at the base of the Himalayas, but occasionally cases have been reported from other parts as well. It is known that in these cases infection of the lungs takes place by droplets of infected sputum. It has been mentioned in the textbooks that pneumonia caused by P. pestis is usually of a lobular type. We have however

A Note on the Epidemiology of Pneumonic Plague

Primary pneumonic plague is a well recognised form of the disease, but on account of its comparative rarity it has not attracted much attention and very little has been done to establish its bionomics and in particular its relationship to the more common bubonic variety of the disease. This is the more surprising since it presents certain well marked characteristics both clinical and epidemiolo...

Levofloxacin Cures Experimental Pneumonic Plague in African Green Monkeys

BACKGROUND Yersinia pestis, the agent of plague, is considered a potential bioweapon due to rapid lethality when delivered as an aerosol. Levofloxacin was tested for primary pneumonic plague treatment in a nonhuman primate model mimicking human disease. METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty-four African Green monkeys (AGMs, Chlorocebus aethiops) were challenged via head-only aerosol inhalation with 3-14...

A plasminogen-activating protease specifically controls the development of primary pneumonic plague.

Primary pneumonic plague is transmitted easily, progresses rapidly, and causes high mortality, but the mechanisms by which Yersinia pestis overwhelms the lungs are largely unknown. We show that the plasminogen activator Pla is essential for Y. pestis to cause primary pneumonic plague but is less important for dissemination during pneumonic plague than during bubonic plague. Experiments manipula...

Yersinia pestis is the etiological agent of bubonic and pneumonic plague, diseases which have caused over 200 milllion human deaths in the past. Plague still occurs throughout the world today, though for reasons that are not fully understood pandemics of disease do not develop from these outbreaks. Antibiotic treatment of bubonic plague is usually effective, but pneumonic plague is difficult to...

Administration of antibody to the lung protects mice against pneumonic plague.

Intratracheal delivery of aerosolized monoclonal antibodies with specificity for Yersinia pestis LcrV and F1 antigens protected mice in a model of pneumonic plague. These data support the utility of inhaled antibodies as a fast-acting postexposure treatment for plague.

Intranasal administration of an inactivated Yersinia pestis vaccine with interleukin-12 generates protective immunity against pneumonic plague.

Inhalation of Yersinia pestis causes pneumonic plague, which rapidly progresses to death. A previously licensed killed whole-cell vaccine is presently unavailable due to its reactogenicity and inconclusive evidence of efficacy. The present study now shows that vaccination intranasally (i.n.) with inactivated Y. pestis CO92 (iYp) adjuvanted with interleukin-12 (IL-12) followed by an i.n. challen...
