Variability in Nitrate Uptake Kinetics of Phytoplankton Communities in a Mediterranean Coastal Lagoon
نویسندگان
چکیده
Nitrate uptake kinetics of different phytoplankton communities exhibit great variability over a 1-year period. Classical saturation kinetics accompanied by an induction phase are shown by blooms of Chaetoceros sp. in low nitrate waters. Biphasic kinetics, with transition points between 10 and 50 ìM, are shown by blooms of Skeletonema costatum and flagellates, while unsaturated kinetics (up to 100 ìM) are shown by Thalassiosira blooms and flagellate blooms. The latter also exhibit surge uptake of nitrate in situations of negative growth rates and rather high ammonium levels. The uptake patterns of the three diatom genera are similar to those observed in cultures or consistent with known internal nitrate accumulation characteristics. Based on the kinetic patterns presented, it is apparent that, for nitrate concentrations near 50 ìM such as in upwelling areas, nitrate uptake will be underestimated in present models of nitrate assimilation by a factor of almost 2 for S. costatum and a factor of about 3 for Thalassiosira sp. ? 1997 Academic Press Limited

Study of phytoplankton community in coastal waters of Hormozgan province, Qeshm and Leangeh Islands
The study of spatial and temporal variability of distribution of phytoplankton communities in Northern part of the Persian Gulf (Qeshm andLengeh Islands) was studied. In this study, five groups (47 genera) of phytoplankton include Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Crysophyceae and Euglenophyceae were identified. The results showed that Diatoms group (79.6 %) and Rhizosolenia genus (...
متن کاملContribution of several nitrogen sources to growth of Alexandrium catenella during blooms in Thau lagoon, southern France
A monitoring program with a weekly sampling frequency over a 15-month period indicates that urea concentrations above a certain threshold level may trigger the blooms of Alexandrium catenella in Thau lagoon. However, urea concentrations were also sometimes related to ammonium and dissolved organic nitrogen concentrations, indicating that the role of urea may not be a direct one. An original app...
متن کاملTemporal and spatial fluctuations of phytoplankton in a tropical coastal lagoon, southeast Brazil.
Spatial and temporal variability of the phytoplankton community in the tropical coastal Imboassica lagoon, an environment naturally isolated from the ocean by a narrow sandbar, was analysed every two weeks for 19 months by sampling three sites. During this study, the lagoon received direct input of marine water three times, resulting in remarkable salinity, nutrient concentrations and phytoplan...
متن کاملPhytoplankton seasonal dynamics in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon: emphasis on the picoeukaryote community
The dynamics of the phytoplankton community were investigated in a marine coastal lagoon (Thau, NW Mediterranean) from February 1999 to January 2000. Dilution experiments, chlorophyll a (Chl a) size-fractionation and primary production measurements were conducted monthly. Maximum growth and microzooplankton grazing rates were estimated from Chl a biomass fractions to separate picofrom nanoand m...
متن کاملPhytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing in the Homa Lagoon (İzmir Bay, Turkey)
Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing were investigated at one station in the Homa Lagoon from February to January in 2006-2007. Our results showed significant seasonal variations in phytoplankton dynamics. Microzooplankton was mainly composed of dinoflagellates and tintinnid ciliates and nauplii. Microzooplankton grazing increased with increasing of temperature. Grazing ra...
