چکیده

We present an analysis of XMM-Newton and RXTE data from three observations of the neutron star LMXB 4U 1636-536. The X-ray spectra show clear evidence of a broad, asymmetric iron emission line extending over the energy range 4–9 keV. The line profile is consistent with relativistically broadened Fe K-α emission from the inner accretion disk. The Fe K-α line in 4U 1636-536 is considerably broader than the asymmetric iron lines recently found in other neutron star LMXBs, which indicates a high disk inclination. We find evidence that the broad iron line feature is a combination of several K-α lines from iron in different ionization states. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks — binaries: close — stars: individual (4U 1636-536) — stars: neutron — X-rays: binaries — X-rays: stars

Strong-field general relativity and quasi-periodic oscillations in x-ray binaries

Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at frequencies near 1000 Hz were recently discovered in several x-ray binaries containing neutron stars. Two sources show no correlation between QPO frequency and source count rate (Berger et al. 1996, Zhang et al. 1996). We suggest that the QPO frequency is determined by the Keplerian orbital frequency near the marginally stable orbit predicted by general rel...

Relativistic Iron Emission Lines in Neutron Star Low-mass X-ray Binaries as Probes of Neutron Star Radii

Using Suzaku observations of three neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (Ser X−1, 4U 1820−30 and GX 349+2) we have found broad, asymmetric, relativistic Fe K emission lines in all three objects. These Fe K lines can be well fit by a model for lines from a relativistic accretion disk (‘diskline’), allowing a measurement of the inner radius of the accretion disk, and hence an upper limit on the n...

Bounds on the Compactness of Neutron Stars from Brightness Oscillations During X-ray Bursts

The discovery of high-amplitude brightness oscillations at the spin frequency or its first overtone in six neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries during type 1 X-ray bursts provides a powerful new way to constrain the compactness of these stars, and hence to constrain the equation of state of the dense matter in all neutron stars. Here we present the results of general relativistic calculatio...

A Non-pre Double-peaked Burst from 4u 1636–536: Evidence for Burning Front Propagation

We analyse Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) Proportional Counter Array (PCA) data of a double-peaked burst from the low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1636–536 that shows no evidence for photospheric radius expansion (PRE). We find that the X-ray emitting area on the star increases with time as the burst progresses, even though the photosphere does not expand. We argue that this is a strong indi...

Discovery of Microsecond Soft Lags in the X-Ray Emission of the Atoll Source 4U 1636-536

Exploiting the presence of kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the timing power spectrum, we find that the soft x-ray emission of the neutron-star X-ray binary and atoll source 4U 1636-536 modulated at the QPO frequency lags behind that of the hard x-ray emission. Emission in the 3.8–6.4 keV band is delayed by 25.0±3.3 μs relative to the 9.3–69 keV band. The delay increases in magni...
