چکیده

While a Global Positioning System (GPS) is the most widely used sensor modality for aircraft navigation, researchers have been motivated to investigate other navigational sensor modalities because of the desire to operate in GPS denied environments. Due to advances in computer vision and control theory, monocular camera systems have received growing interest as an alternative/collaborative sensor to GPS systems. Cameras can act as navigational sensors by detecting and tracking feature points in an image. One limiting factor in this method is the current inability to relate feature points as they enter and leave the camera …eld of view. The contribution of this paper is a new vision-based state estimation method that allows sets of feature points to be related such that the aircraft position and orientation can be correlated to previous GPS data so that GPS-like navigation can be maintained in denied environments.

A UAV for bridge inspection: Visual servoing control law with orientation limits

This paper describes the dynamics of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for monitoring of structures and maintenance of bridges. It presents a novel control law based on computer vision for quasi-stationary flights above a planar target. The first part of the UAV's mission is the navigation from an initial position to a final position in an unknown 3D environment. The new control law uses the hom...

Vision-Aided Inertial Navigation for Flight Control

Many onboard navigation systems use the Global Positioning System to bound the errors that result from integrating inertial sensors over time. Global Positioning System information, however, is not always accessible since it relies on external satellite signals. To this end, a vision sensor is explored as an alternative for inertial navigation in the context of an Extended Kalman Filter used in...

Visual Servoing for Underactuated VTOL UAVs : a Linear, Homography-Based Framework

The paper concerns the control of Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) Underactuated Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in hover flight, based on measurements provided by an on-board video camera. The objective is to stabilize the vehicle to the equilibrium pose associated with an image of a planar target, using a minimal sensor suite and poor knowledge of the environment. By using the homography matrix co...

3D Reconstruction of a Landslide by Application of UAV & Structure from Motion

Landslides exhibit complex geomorphologies and are very difficult to measure. Photogrammetric methods are promising tools to overcome such problems by reconstructing 3D from overlapping images of the surface. Airborne and terrestrial image acquisition platforms are possible data sources for comprehensive digital landslide modelling. This study presents a computer vision application of the struc...

Extended Abstract: Vision Only Pose Estimation and Scene Reconstruction on Airborne Platforms

We aim to demonstrate unaided visual 3D pose estimation and map reconstruction using both monocular and stereo vision techniques. To date, our work has focused on collecting data from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, which generates a number of significant issues specific to the application. Such issues include scene reconstruction degeneracy from planar data, poor structure initialisation for monocul...
