In this experimental study, we present new results addressing the early-time, lowangle, high-speed component of the ejecta velocity distribution as a function of time for hypervelocity vertical impacts into sand. Although this regime represents a very small portion of total ejected mass in laboratory experiments, it comprises a greater percentage of growth for larger craters. 2010 Elsevier Inc. Transient Crater Growth in Low Density Targets
Introduction: Recent studies suggest that impacts into highly porous target materials require a new cratering regime controlled by compressional effects (1). Such research is important for interpreting the geologic history of small bodies and for the upcoming Deep Impact mission in 2005. An alternative view (2) suggests that even highly porous targets (density of 0.2g/cc) undergo gravity contro...
متن کاملTime-resolved studies of hypervelocity vertical impacts into porous particulate targets: Effects of projectile density on early-time coupling and crater growth
The depth and duration of energy and momentum coupling in an impact shapes the formation of the crater. The earliest stages of crater growth (when the projectile transfers its energy and momentum to the target) are unrecoverable when the event is described by late stage parameters, which collapse the initial conditions of the impact into a singular point in time and space. During the coupling p...
متن کاملMeasurements of Ejecta Velocity Distribution from Regolith Targets in Oblique
Introduction: The velocity distribution of impact ejecta from regolith-like target has been investigated in laboratory for nearly three decades. For the case of vertical impact, the ejecta velocity distribution is determined experimentally and given by a power-law with an exponent of –1.22 [1]. There is an upper limit to the ejecta velocity (Hartmann cutoff velocity) that depends on impact velo...
متن کاملA Dust Cloud of Ganymede Maintained by Hypervelocity Impacts of Interplanetary Micrometeoroids
A dust cloud of Ganymede has been detected by in-situ measurements with the dust detector onboard the Galileo spacecraft. The dust grains have been sensed at altitudes below five Ganymede radii (Ganymede radius = 2, 635 km). Our analysis identifies the particles in the dust cloud surrounding Ganymede by their impact direction, impact velocity, and mass distribution and implies that they have be...
متن کاملSpectroscopic measurements of vapor clouds due to oblique impacts
Vapor clouds generated by oblique impacts were observed spectroscopically. The observations here concentrate on the earliest downrange-moving component, among multiple components of vapor clouds generated by hypervelocity impacts of quartz projectiles into dolomite targets. The spectrum of impact vapor simultaneously exhibits blackbody radiation, molecular band emission, and atomic line emissio...
