Dispersion on Trees

چکیده
In the k-dispersion problem, we need to select k nodes of a given graph so as to maximize the minimum distance between any two chosen nodes. This can be seen as a generalization of the independent set problem, where the goal is to select nodes so that the minimum distance is larger than 1. We design an optimal O(n) time algorithm for the dispersion problem on trees consisting of n nodes, thus improving the previous O(n log n) time solution from 1997. We also consider the weighted case, where the goal is to choose a set of nodes of total weight at least W . We present an O(n log n) algorithm improving the previous O(n log n) solution. Our solution builds on the search version (where we know the minimum distance λ between the chosen nodes) for which we present tight Θ(n log n) upper and lower bounds.

In June 2009, we used a novel technique to quantify dispersion patterns among a large group of calling male Epomophorus wahlbergi congregated around five neighboring and synchronously fruiting sycamore fig trees (Ficus sycomorus) in Kruger National Park, South Africa by using the physics of sound attenuation over distance to monitor and map positions of calling males without disturbing their ma...

The influence of vegetation on the concentrations of traffic pollutants in urban street canyons is examined using numerical simulations with the CFD code OpenFOAM. This CFD approach is validated against literature wind tunnel data on traffic pollutant dispersion in street canyons. The impact of avenues of trees is simulated for a variety of vegetation types and the full range of approaching win...
متن کاملTree dispersion, abundance, and diversity in a tropical dry forest.
Patterns of tree abundance and dispersion in a tropical deciduous (dry) forest are summarized. The generalization that tropical trees have spaced adults did not hold. All species were either clumped or randomly dispersed, with rare species more clumped than common species. Breeding system was unrelated to species abundance or dispersion, but clumping was related to mode of seed dispersal. Juven...
متن کاملDispersal limitation of Tillandsia species correlates with rain and host structure in a central Mexican tropical dry forest
Seed dispersal permits the colonization of favorable habitats and generation of new populations, facilitating escape from habitats that are in decline. There is little experimental evidence of the factors that limit epiphyte dispersion towards their hosts. In a tropical dry forest in central Mexico, we monitored the phenology of dispersion of epiphyte species of the genus Tillandsia; we tested ...
متن کاملPhylogenetic Resolution and Quantifying the Phylogenetic Diversity and Dispersion of Communities
Conservation biologists and community ecologists have increasingly begun to quantify the phylogenetic diversity and phylogenetic dispersion in species assemblages. In some instances, the phylogenetic trees used for such analyses are fully bifurcating, but in many cases the phylogenies being used contain unresolved nodes (i.e. polytomies). The lack of phylogenetic resolution in such studies, whi...
